figuring out what my damaged rose is 'worth'
Comments (45)Jeez, I just skimmed through the thread and saw that because I used asterisks to simulate a swear word, Garden Web removed the first post I made today. Eyeroll. So my above correction doesn't even make any sense now. To reiterate it: Today the owner of the roofing company came into my yard without announcing himself. I only knew he was there because my wonderful watchdog barked. He had a camera and I assume took photos but I don't know for sure of what. He also had another person with him. I went out as he was getting in his truck to leave and he introduced himself and the professional gardener he had brought with him. He said he has never seen anything like my letter and there was no way I was getting $700 out of him (which was the number I finally went with, significantly less than the total sum for damages and repair). He said I could take him to court, but he would only countersue for his lost wages, which would be substantial. He could see I had "a bit of a garden," though, and was willing to "chip in a few dollars for some plants". I explained that he couldn't see much of the damage because it involved plants that weren't there anymore, that was kind of the whole point, and that I had estimates for replanting and remulching and it costs a lot. He essentially said I was lying, that there was no way there was enough damaged to total $700, and tried to intimidate me by adding that he was contacting the property management and owner (which I already did, of course) and that the woman with him was a professional gardener. He says his guys had legal access to do the work and had to do it around messes like dog poop (yeah, I miss a pile once in a while, I admit it) and there was just no way to avoid some damage with the kind of work that had to be done. I say this is bull poop (ahem: happy, GW magic eye?), most of the damage was done during cleanup and if it had been the garden of one of the guys up there on the roof, they would have made sure to find a way to protect it. I've since called 4 local roof companies and asked them and 4 out of 4 have answered that no, there would not be big piles of shingles and debris on the flowerbeds if they did the work. As a rule if someone is trying to intimidate me I assume there's something I CAN do that they don't want me to do. But I'm deathly scared of a countersuit, because there's no way I could pay it if he did win. In retrospect, the minute I found out who he was and that he had simply walked into my fenced backyard I should have called the cops. I am really angry now -- I HATE being manipulated -- but I have to find out what the likelihood of his countersuit being successful is before I can go ahead like I want to and sue his sleazy brains out. Comments (39)The roommate has "dictated" the month? And has "dictated" the price they'll pay? Oh come on! LOL We're talking about a girl on a budget! You've already stated your position on this. No sense to repeat. I think it's time to give some praise to a girl who is sticking to a budget. That shows responsibility and maturity. Rare these days. I give credit to her for that. You don't know her situation but you don't like her. OK, I can accept that. Your daughter likes her, wants to live with her.... kind of says a lot. Lydia, can't go with this one. You admit you don't know her, but you say you're trying to give her "leverage" to get the larger room. You use the term "fair" but sounds to me like you are getting a little selfish under the pretense of "helping". If you TRULY want advice, back off. I sense your daughter is going to be just fine. She doesn't seem to be the be the one causing trouble here and I also sense that you will make things miserable for her if you go too far and hopefully that's not what you want. And let's clarify: "Dictated" (obviously states your position clearly!) the month they'll move in. She's on a budget and made her needs clear. I commend her for that. "Dictated" the price they'll pay. No, you're wrong there. She specified that she's on a budget and doesnt' have unlimited funds. She specified what SHE could pay. Obviously she's not with unlimited funds and is staying within a budget. Kudos to her for that. Shows maturity and responsibility. There's certainly an arrogance here. I stand by my position that you should back off. And yes, of course we want the best for our kids and want to give them GOOD advice. Crack house? Leverage to get something more??? 'Nuff said. I wish your daughter luck. Methinks she's gonna need it....See MoreChez Fleur De Mer House Post sign
Comments (52)DH got some great brownie points by installing my post panels today. It's turning out to be a much bigger job than I thought after the installation. Now I am touching up all of the places we had wedi washers and regular washers, used at least 5 per panel. and no idea WHY i didn't consider the sides of the panels, but i didn't so those all need to be tiled and need to just blend them all together so they look seemless. Spend this afternoon until it got dark starting the work. i've been using thinset and it is so messy for this work, but I couldn't think of anything else that will hold the tess when they are vertical. here you go. also did a grout test, you can see it on my flickr site Here is a link that might be useful: Chez Fleur De Mer installed...See MorePEGASUS, LEANDER, A SHROPSHIRE LAD- Could you please help me out?
Comments (17)Rebecca, I garden in zone 5 now, but for decades I had a zone 4 rose garden and I experimented with every darn climber I could find that anyone told me would be hardy in zone 4. And I can also tell you that Ameri2nal is correct that wrapping in burlap is not going to do the trick. Been there, tried that - no real success. Your Johann Strauss row is lovely - but it is planted next to the foundation of the house (always a bit warmer) and you say that it is cut down to the soil level every year and regrows. That's often the case in zone 4 - you can find roses that properly planted (as you are doing) will survive and bounce back - but in a climber where you really want long canes to survive from year to year, just survival of what is below ground is not enough. I'd be shocked if you have any surviving cane above the snow line on your original 3 roses you were inquiring about. And I must add that I'm dubious about live cane on Reine des Violettes, either. I never was successful with that one in zone 4. I have it planted now in my zone 5 garden, but I don't know yet how it will have survived its first winter here - although it has been a mild one. But I'm not holding my breath. I can tell you that there is a virtually thornless climber called Victorian Memory (AKA Isabella Skinner) that I grew for years in zone 4. Well, really it is a very tall shrub, but it can be pruned and trained to grow on a trellis. I had it tied up and over one side of a copper arch for many years. I think there are still my photos of it on that you can view at HelpMeFind...probably you'd have to click on "older" photos. It is available at Rogue Valley Roses and it is one that I would recommend for your zone. http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.3416.1&tab=1 Anne...See Morejaydub83
