update red brick fireplace (paint)? and what to do with high shelf
Comments (10)Well, I've painted the bricks and area above the shelf. It really helped lighten up the corner area. I'm not sure if I will paint the shelf or leave as is. Lesson learned: the area above the shelf was wood and at first I used a satin paint to match the trim. I felt there was too much shine from the ceiling lights, so I painted over with a matte finish and like it much better. No more glare. I understand where Fori is coming from. I still don't love the fireplace. While painting the bricks I had covered the surround tile to protect them. And I really liked the look of the painted brick w the tile hidden. However, when I pulled off the protective cover to reveal the surround, I felt the same sense of "ugh" I had before painting. Not only is the fireplace dated, but the materials are not cohesive. And painting the brick doesn't change how odd I think the surround looks. That said, I'm glad I painted as it is less dark/dreary. Also, when we are finally able to tear down and replace with a more modern design, the new fireplace will be in the same general light color. It's nice to be able to visualize how the lighter color plays out as we decorate around the area. Any advice on the shelf? Paint the same color as trim? Or try to stain darker--like an espresso? Unfortunately, I can't easily remove to replace the shelf. Sanding would be challenging. Also, there is a groove on the top of the shelf--not sure why it is there (??)....See More60’s home needs new paint! Should I paint the brick?
Comments (1)I would white wash the brick and keep the house the same color take the screen door off and paint the front door a midnight blue. I like the color of the shutters too...See MoreWhat do I do with all this orange brick?
Comments (22)The sidewalk to the side needs to come out from the house. Or else you would walk between plantings. A mature yew will grow to 4-5 feet by 4-5 feet. An azalea will grow to 3-4 feet both in height/width and you want air circulation between plants. Can you post a photo from a bit further back so I can get an idea of the entire landscape situation. I absolutely love low country houses and have one myself. Also what growing zone are you in? Most people smoosh plants up against the house - which is what the prior owners did and that makes that wall seem out of kilter with the house. Doug does great work as a professional. I am just a master gardener by training from OSU with practical experience over 30 years (I maintain 3 acres of gardens by myself). I have done quite of few designs and installations in the Tulsa area, but only for friends. I am also not a fan of the bloom-a-thon azaleas. I prefer the more traditional one time blooms in the spring simply because it is a more spectacular display. I also think it looks odd have pink azaleas bloom in October....See MoreI need help w/beam placement and to paint or not paint fireplace brick
Comments (13)Rachel - thank you - you shared great photos - I will post pictures next week after the walls and trim are painted in Dove White. I really like that black paint idea on fireplace- such a bold move but I love the white fireplaces you show which seem safer. Black happens to be in the wallpaper I am currently hanging in the foyer today. Pics attached. Changing trim and walls white all over the house is a huge transformation from my dingy dark trim and walls and I am creating a monster that is snowballing. The dining room rug looks horrible with my wallpaper so I am now in search of a new rug there and one for the family room and now I need new furniture in there as well. Suggestions are welcome from anyone - It is painted Dove white and you can see the new foyer paper with the new blue study. What about a blue or green velvet sofa with all white room. I have 2 cats and someone said that they are not as attracted to velvet. I am not painting the built-ins around fireplace just yet because I have not picked out kitchen cabinets. Maybe I can have the built-ins sprayed white or the blue??? I could also try to change the trim or molding to make them more modern and even wonder if wood shelves would look good to match my dream beams. Ripping out the built-ins and replacing will be costly unless I find some cool furniture pieces to go there. I will also hold off on the painting the fireplace so I can see what the brick looks with an all white room. My painters love me and they come back every two weeks for my next Phase of renovation. : )...See MoreUser
