I see warm tones- what do you see
Comments (31)I like both of the blue paint colors, they read "masculine" and really bring out the deep jewel tones in the rug. I'm partial to the first one but I'm not sure what they look like IRL, of course. Sorry, I don't see warm tones, or pillows, or baby pictures in this room. I think a stripe in navy blue, hunter green and/or burgundy might be nice for the drapes. I think the hunting prints would be a more interesting grouping if they included one or two matted prints, maybe an old sepia tone, to change things up. I'm racking my brain trying to remember where I saw it, but a pair of round footstool/coffee tables would be more useful and practical than one of either IMO. Ditch the drapes, and the wrought iron piece (love the art poster idea). I'm not sure about the chandelier, I think I would use ivory shades. Maybe a dart game, with the appropriate cork-lined case that would open to protect the walls. A cigar cutter and ashtray on the end table. Brandy snifters and cognac on the bar. I would want a (pocket?) door installed, so that I didn't have to be disturbed by the lions den goings on, that's just me. If the man reads, he'll want a better lamp and a sturdy bookshelf, if he's a music lover, he'll need space for a stereo too....See MoreDo you mentally re-do every kitchen you see?
Comments (30)I'm SO glad it's not just me! Of course I would never say anything out loud - well, okay I did hint to MIL that changing the colors a bit might liven up her space when she mentioned wanting to add cabinets - but I can't help noticing and planning other people's kitchens. Now, I'm not so bad when it's simply a kitchen that's not to my taste - I'm talking about builder-grade kitchens, or those that have solid construction but nobody ever bothered to think about color schemes or efficiency. Writersblock, that is so funny about your pulmonogist's office floor tile. I get the same urges when I come across design elements I love at unexpected places, like holligator I have not been above taking discreet pictures! The problem is that the ones I see most often are the ones that especially make me want to scream, and of course the owners - not having the benefit of reading this forum - are blissfully unaware. One has the range right up between an open doorway - no frame, no counter - and the other side is the 2' depth of counter space running along the wall at a right angle. There is however a beautiful open space to put in more counters and turn it into a galley kitchen, but no, everything is crammed along a single stretch. Funny enough though, my French aunts have typical teeny-tiny European kitchens where everything is diminutive and there is practically no counter space at all, and it doesn't bother me one bit! Go figure! Of course we don't all have the same needs or tastes, but when I see the UNplanned dysfunction and stubborn ugliness of the kitchens where nobody has ever questioned the original design, I have to wonder, was this really put in ON PURPOSE???...See MoreDo you see what I see?
Comments (9)That nest is a thing of beauty. If only hornets weren't so aggressive! What kind of woodstove do you have? When we first moved into this house we heated entirely with a Jotul woodstove in the living room and an antique coal cook stove in the kitchen. Eventually we sold the coal stove, moved the Jotul over to the barn to use there, and bought a bigger Jotul. We kept it going all winter, day and night. I haven't fired the stove up in years. I've been afraid of fire since I've been living alone, but in recent winters I've begun to think longingly of the coziness of a small fire in the Jotul. It's near my desk and would keep me warm without burning a lot of heating oil. My son installed a new fireproof mat underneath it last week and informed me that we have lots of well-seasoned firewood. I had the chimney inspected two years ago. Do you think I need to get it inspected again before I use the stove? The chimney also serves the oil burner. Anyway, I had planned just to tell you I like woodstoves. :-)...See MoreWhat do you do when you run out of lighting space?
Comments (2)There is no "strategy" when you run out of space as everything you then do compromises the amount of light the plant gets which directly affects its growth. You can do things and "get by" but you are doing so at some expense to the plant. The best strategy to have is to only plant as many plants as you can grow under the lights you have.
