My Thanksgiving Cactus is Budding! :)
Comments (38)This is a very exciting thread I must say! I have a number of TCs that have bloomed or are still in bud. I keep mine out on the balcony till late October when temps can drop all the way down to 3-5 degrees C. Once the buds reach some 5mm I take the plants in and keep them at room temps while they are blooming. They then are moved to their winter quarters where I also overwinter my Epiphyllums and Selenicereus at 3-5C at night and around 5-10C daytime. I do let the soil go dry before I water and while dormant I hardly ever water at all. In the picture below is my white TC a month ago - I fully agree with the observations on the purplish tinge to the petals - happens if you keep your plants at lower temps when they're setting buds - clearly my case. A completely white TC, including the pistil, is a very rare variety, not as rare as to warrant $100 for a small cutting of course, but still. Comments (26)Nova12, Has the flower opened up yet? im curious as to what the bloom will look like. On the orchid note, I've suprisingly neglected both my phal and two cymbidiums into blooming for me. One even got knocked over during a stong wind and lost a lot of dirt/compost/orchid-planting-stuff and i haven't even replaced the lost dirt, its just been sitting there blooming with half of the roots exposed. The flowers last a LONG time. This one has been in bloom since mid-December and is still holding on to its flowers, except now they are getting a reddish-orange tinge to them as opposed to the white-brown color of this photo when they had just opened. I usually keep them outside under a patio all year long, but i brought this one in to enjoy the blooms inside....See MoreHelp? My Christmas cactus is dying...
Comments (14)I just noticed you have this thread going on the houseplants forum, too....looks like you are getting the same responses over there. It is usually not necessary to repot plants, but if you are experiencing problems, one of the suspects is bad soil...it could be spoiled. If you can get your hands on some Pro-Mix, that is one of the best soils on the market. Plastic pots can sometimes pose problems...they trap the moisture for a longer period of time than the clay/terra cotta pots do. Depending on how often you are watering (shouldn't be on an exact schedule), it might not be dry enough before you are watering again. I would switch to a terra cotta pot, but that is up to you. Yes, each segment (this should be fairly obvious) will form a new plant. I place mine (the bottom end) in little plastic pots with good soil and keep them damp-moist, but not wet. Prop the segments up with little rocks or something to keep them stable during this process. I keep mine in an east window so they don't get any hot afternoon sun. Good luck!...See MoreAnyone else already thinking about Christmas?
Comments (20)dreamgoddess, Just a quick note, I am running out the door, the dishes you posted look almost exactly alike, I pulled my plate to compare. The biggest difference I can see is in the Dinner plate, the 5 small flowers "groups" that go along the rim are different, theirs all "match" whereas the ones that are Lady Carlyle are not matching bunches of flowers. So as long as you like the ones for ebay and you trust the seller (quality and safety) then I would say you have a great opportunity for some great dishes....See MoreDylan (NY, zone 5)
