Style of house and why two doors?
Comments (15)The door on the right is one we put in, but both doors were identical and trim around it as well, which leads me to believe they were both original when it was built in 1910. Also, both rooms that the doors enter into are almost identical. We have to a few elderly people in town who remember families who have lived in this house. The oldest memory would be from a women who was friends with a child who lived here. This would have been the 30's. She said the family had FIFTEEN children, and she remembers stacks of dishes in the sink every time she came over lol. Another woman I talked to actually live here from the fifties to seventies. It was her parents who painted the whole house green and pink, with grass green carpet!...See MoreIn the home stretch, two more questions.
Comments (15)Thanks for the comments and replies. You've given me a lot to think about. Florantha: I had actually thought about switching over to just real towels. They have some cute sets on etsy. I might look into that more seriously. Tinker: My ceiling is an old pine ceiling that we filled, primed, and painted. It's been up there since the 50s. Pevo: would I used just the mosaic tile or the noche as well? I definitely like the idea of creating the frame behind the stove. Ironcook: Thanks, we chose cherry counters from Lumber Liquidators. My only issue with them is they were not exactly the same width so we had to sand one side down to match the other which means we had to reseal them after they were installed. Otherwise I love them. I also love your idea of creating a frame. Livewireoak: I do like the idea of covering some of the outlets to the right of the sink. I didn't realize we would have quite so many when we were planning. Eventually a small TV will go there, but until then . . . Flowers n co: thanks for the suggestion. So do you think the 8x8 tile would be ok behind the stove or should we do something a bit smaller? Natal: thanks for the link. I love love love simple human products. I think I will play with the tile and see what looks good. I will post pictures....See MoreWhich of these two looks more like a Craftsman
Comments (32)Why would Hardie Shingles be more susceptible to termites than Hardie Lap siding? It's all wood fiber & cement. It wouldn't. I haven't decided on whether to use the shingles or the siding yet. that is still something to decide. I'm leaning towards shingles because I prefer the look. If you want gutters the exposed rafter tails will make that difficult. I've seen rafter tails that support gutters but they seem expensive and would need to be made of cellular PVC. there are half round gutters that are suspended but they are much smaller than conventional gutters. the builder told me today there are definitely gutters. Not sure how he'll be doing them. I will inquire further. You have misunderstood my comments; I am also trying to prevent this house from becoming a builder's special. We're just approaching it from different perspectives and experience. It's all about composition and that can involve many building elements. I have the advantage of having seen all of my bad ideas built. Understood, and I'm most appreciative. I do realize we tend to write more briefly than we may speak. :) Removing the mutton chops and corner boards are giant steps in the right direction. You'll get there eventually. I was quite explicit about removing them and they seemed to understand. I'll see next week when I get the new set of drawings. (Wish me luck. LOL) Tell me why the gables are allowed on the front of the house but not on the main roof. Mixing front facing gables with main hip roofs is one of the things I have rarely seen done well. I think and it's just a guess, that it has to do something with the amount of roof exposed. It's mostly an insurance thing. What's behind the 3 little windows? A plan would help. I started a new thread and will post the plans in the new thread for you. I didn't post them because I thought most had seen it already. New thread...See MoreCurrent paint color to compliment cream cabinets & black granite
Comments (28)Pick either a soft green or a soft blue/gray. Gray will not work. Either will work if you're selling. You don't need to do linen or cream on the walls to sell. Sometimes a neutral color will actually make the house sing more and a soft blue/gray or a soft green can do that. (In fact the house I sold in 2010 during the recession had shades of green on the walls and that's what the new owners loved. The condo I sold in 2016 had a green bedroom and that's the one room color she loved the most.) Your light fixtures are fine. In fact they're timeless. Don't change them...See MoreCMA67 A
