Anyone growing Mango tree in the bay area?
Comments (23)FULL HOT SUN is the way to go. Avoid any shade if possible. NEVER plant where water will stand in winter. In Summer..like now, water, let dry, water. Not too dry. An organic fertilizer with some iron will green them up. San Jose is the next hot bay area spot to grow Mangoes. Summer temps are about perfect. I have a 12-14' Manila with fruit right now and a 5' Ataulfo ( from seed) also with some fruit. In Hayward where an 80f or more this summer has been rare. If only warmer... One last..Flys are the best pollinators of Mango trees in the city. A hint. How you get them is up to you.....See Morebay area Manila Mango showing growth buds..
Comments (3)The one that bore fruit in 06 Tammy took a hard hit..alive but it might be a two steps forward last summer-two back this winter. The larger Manila-and it always has looked slightly different to me, just looks like it was chilled. No dead frosted leaves. Last year it flowered very early then the early summer wilt. It has a good sized trunk thickness, will to survive. It's not even in my best warmest area-it was at the time I planted it,that's another story- When the buds look a little more pronounced, and that could be just days with the temps here in Hayward reaching low 70's right now,I will post it. I've done it,it can be done. Luck -or lack of bad luck- helps....See MoreFremont CA Bay Area Mango tree on YouTube.
Comments (0)Here it is- giving hope to all of us in the 37th latitude in the San Francisco bay area. Fremont was up graded to 10a in 2012. About a year after this tree was planted. Any guesses on what it is? Manila? Autulfo? or? Heck, cant post the vid. Just search for Mangoes in Northern California?...See Moreplanting manilla mango tree - Zone 9b Bay Area
Comments (5)My advice? Buy two more..or three more. Plant them about as far apart and in full sun as you have. Because the wait for one tree to give you many fruits is going to take at least 6-10 years at best in Fremont. If you plant four or five trees? You will get more fruit without waiting for one tree to reach 15 or 20 feet. I planted mine in the ground in 2012 and its about 12' tall. Full sun, reflected heat of a house or wall. NO SHADE!..if you can help it. Lots of summer water, feed them when they flush. Remember in summer...water,water,water. Soak deep.. THEN let it go a little dry in between When they show they like what care you give them.by flushing well, keep up that good routine of water and feed.. Here's my Hayward Manila....See MoreKerry in Sunset zone 9b
