planting manilla mango tree - Zone 9b Bay Area

I bought this mango tree from Regan's nursery and wondering if anyone has experience growing them in the California zone9b bay area weather. Pls advice on how to prepare the ground/soil mix and also any tips on a good spot to plant (all day sun etc)

We bought one from a nursery 5 years ago and planted it with potting soil and it's on a drip system for watering. We didn't get many mangoes at all until this year. It's now over 7' tall and LOADED. We are in hot, dry Southern CA Zone 9b. I would think it will do amazing where you are. They love mist and water. The couple we tasted were so yummy. It's a great variety. My neighbor can't wait till the tree grows big on HIS side of the wall, so he can have mangoes too! As far as fertilizer, we tested the soil and fertilize as the soil dictates. Our soil here is pretty bad, so it's necessary!

Ive successfully grown mangoes in the 9b region of palm springs with mild winters and very hot summers micro climates make the differnce in planting i have grown papaya as well successfully on the east facing walls with good winter light from the south mango trees require a little shade in the hot summers until there established papayas grow way faster and can handle higher temps than mangoes i am also growing bananas in shaded microclimates around my whole yard the trees that are eaposed to full sun grow less than the trees exposed to shaded sun i trim shade trees in fall and winter to allow extra light into the fruit trees during late winter and spring during the summer water demand is high for the hot days in the summer i cut my watering in half and water for 6 mins in the morning at 6:30 am and the other 6 minutes at 12:15 pm at peak UV index just one day of no watering can serverly damage the plants as the heat and sandy soil drys out very fast more established trees get the same watering regiment in the summer and do just great i also take two days out of the week to watwr the trees deeply, tuesdays and fridays

"These are 3 plants together and do I need to separate them out before planting ?" I bought 3 like that from Lowes in 2014. They were not as tall as yours. I read somewhere that papaya roots don't like to be disturbed, I don't have time to look for that reference. When I took them out of the container, I was able to easily separate one but the other 2 seemed very much intertwined. So I planted one by itself and two together. This was the first week of September. All 3 survived and produced. They started flowering and fruiting in 2015 and the first harvest was in April 2016. I am staggering plantings now, trying to maintain papaya trees at different stages of growth. I harvested 46 papaya this year from 3 trees. I am in coastal Southern California.

gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) Thanks! Do the blooms stick around for a while? I have perennials that I have allowed to dry to in place and I wanted to cut them all back once the irises are about to bloom. I have them planted in bunches of 5 and 7 and want to have a period where everything else is cut back and iris are the main feature. This is an attempt to allow me to cut back my other year round perennials to the ground (grasses/echinacea) and fill in the gap between cutting back and new group with another flower. So if the blooms are short lived, then maybe I should cut the perennials back before the iris flower but if the blooms stick around then I'll wait for the first bloom, then cut. Also do they come back year after year for you?

@Fori -Thanks so much, I think that is a great solution for the bay area. I think we may end up going that route :) All of the fences in our neighborhood are supposed to be 6 ft but somehow most seem to be 8 or even 10 :) I was reticent to ask, because we get along really well and I didn't want to make them feel pressured to do something to the shared fence that they didn't want to, but I think that is probably the best idea!

My advice? Buy two more..or three more. Plant them about as far apart and in full sun as you have. Because the wait for one tree to give you many fruits is going to take at least 6-10 years at best in Fremont. If you plant four or five trees? You will get more fruit without waiting for one tree to reach 15 or 20 feet. I planted mine in the ground in 2012 and its about 12' tall.

Full sun,reflected heat of a house or wall. NO SHADE!..if you can help it. Lots of summer water,feed them when they flush.

Remember in summer...water,water,water. Soak deep.. THEN let it go a little dry in between

When they show they like what care you give them.by flushing well,keep up that good routine of water and feed..
