Peat pots for Mangoes? NEVER!..not here. Cut off the lip on those pots to below soil level..and plant in BLACK NURSERY POTS. What they need here is- heat. Black pots absorb heat. Put those plants against the hottest wall you have...and water the heck out of them all summer. When they start to flush? Fertilize THEN. Its when they absorb it best I found. I have a near 9' Mango,thats flowering and I did all I told you (mine was never in a peat pot) until I planted it..in the hottest spot I have. Mangoes in the bay area need to babied the first two years in ground..NO frost. Cover,heat, whatever needs to be done,but no frost.

Francesco,Not as long as we don't fall below 32f or 0C. We did about 3 years ago,and I put a plastic sheet over it and a spotlight under it for night warming. This year we were at 32f for a morning low,and I never covered it at all. Some top leaves were singed. No damage to growing tips. After the first two winters,Mangoes hardiness goes way up. Even with record rains this winter it did fine. Pwr. The Fremont Mango is on Bruce Street. If people use Google streets then they can see that tree was only a 3' stick- not a single side branch in 2011. By 2016,it had market sized fruit and was walkunderable! Its getting all day sun,and not a single other plant is near it to offer root competition. Still,that's very fast growth. Maybe they used lawn fertilizers? I'm watering and always fertilizing mine at about the same age. It has a long ways to go to be a small tree.

Its special. Its gotten a ton of views in one year on YouTube. I have one about the same age..and its maybe half the tree this is. I push it as hard as I can with water and fertilizer too. Yep,seedlings from this Fremont tree should be planted asap.

Is that the Celadine? Usually I have no tip problems with her. Most years. Some very cold -2007-winters just for one, can mush tips. That front border would a great place to try P.obtusa. I get the feeling that in ground they would be much more likely to hang on leaves longer into the winter..bloom longer too. In ground always beats in a pot. I just don't have room for everything in the few "perfect spots" Or..just too tempting for plant takers. THAT eats up most of my front yard unfortunately.
