Anyone growing Mango tree in the bay area?
Comments (23)FULL HOT SUN is the way to go. Avoid any shade if possible. NEVER plant where water will stand in winter. In Summer..like now, water, let dry, water. Not too dry. An organic fertilizer with some iron will green them up. San Jose is the next hot bay area spot to grow Mangoes. Summer temps are about perfect. I have a 12-14' Manila with fruit right now and a 5' Ataulfo ( from seed) also with some fruit. In Hayward where an 80f or more this summer has been rare. If only warmer... One last..Flys are the best pollinators of Mango trees in the city. A hint. How you get them is up to you.....See MoreS.F. bay area Mango with flower buds..
Comments (6)I just took some pictures, and will post them when my laptop with Photoshop gets back from repairs. In the book "Tropical Mangos", it says of Julie: "The tree grows well throughout the island (of Jamaica)but often performs poorly beyond its shores." It's naturally dwarf growing, compact. Pine Island refuses to sell it, because of disease issues. It's the smallest of all the trees Top T. sent me. It was showing signs of anthracnose on a few of the leaves, so I sprayed one test leaf with Immunox, that I use on my roses. The next day, the leaf showed signs of burning, but the rest of the plant looked better. The tree couldn't be more disease prone than my exhibition rose bushes. The fruit sounds worth the fuss. It's described as completely without fiber, with a "deep, rich, spicy flavor" or a sweet pineapple/coconut flavor. Comments (2)if it was grafted by a retail nursery its probably turpentine. seedling mangos that have a turpentine flavor and usually stringy fruit make the most preferable pest resistant rootstock, they may not even develop to be large fruit because it is a seedling, I was told turpentine doesnt always come consistently true, but because they usually carry the turpentine trait they make good rootstock...See MoreNorCal Baileys Marvel-SWEET!..
Comments (35)Hey mangodog. Yes,its rootstock now. In 2011 and 2012,It was constantly sending suckers up below the graft. I would cut them off..but they seemed so vigorous. And so were the Baileys...just only vertical growth. It had reached 7' not including the pot. YET, it did grow a single Mango fruit below the graft ON THE TRUNK. It didn't taste any different from the fruit that grew up high normally. And it didn't look any different. After fruiting in 2011,in a pot, I left it uncovered on a single 32f night in January 2012..and it was devastated. All growth shriveled and died. In spring 2012,new sprouts on a trunk about 2' tall grew...slowly. I then planted it in ground were it grew well that summer. Again,we had a cold January 2013..BUT, with only a T shirt over it..NO damage. All summer of 2013 it grew, and really added bulk, stems went from those wiry potted plant type to real tree like stems. Its now about 40 inches tall..about 3' wide. And with covering and the light bulb during this years freeze, has no damage on it..still flushing leaves are greening. Now,when it will fruit again I dont know. Since 2007,I've gotten Manila,Baileys, and Rootstock Mango to fruit in the bay area and yes, they were sweet. Unlike Papaya's or Guava's...all the work pays off in sweet fruit here. And a nice looking small tree....See Morestanofh 10a Hayward,Ca S.F. bay area
