Would I be right to consider Baileys Marvel a hardier Haden?
Comments (19)A Bailey's Marvel is an "improved" Haden and descended from Haden. Possibly sweeter or "candy like" from the reviews I've read. Flavor & texture is superior to Haden and well liked, but BM may be a bit harder to get established from what I've read. Kent or VP may be better options if you want a fast growing, trouble free cold hardy tree with traditional Haden flavor. I think Kent is probably your best option. VP is cold hardy, grows fast, but will get to 50' with age - just like a Haden. Your children will eventually need to call the fire department to pick them if not topped periodically. I think Kent stays at a more manageable height. People who have tasted both Kent & VP give the edge to Kent. Kent I have heard may be a more manageable tree when it comes to height. VP is a larger fruit and possibly fastter growing and slightly more cold hardy....See MoreHey Mango Gang, from Northern California
Comments (6)Hello Tammy! The Baileys Marvel..is confusing as you might have read. What I forgot to mention on the other posts is,there is a single Mango fruit BELOW the graftline still healthy..growing straight from the trunk. What strange too is,that the seed inside that one is wider then the fruit. You can see it's shape. Like an Alien waiting to get out! Tomato's were good-sweet,but not the typical yield. But sure better than last year's almost none. The neighbors Dragon fruits were there one day..but they were picked long before they turned any color. On purpose or.. taken ? I dont know. Mexicola Avocado-good but pitiful small amounts. White Sapote-good,but since its starting to get too big for my small yard,I have had to prune it..and the fruits took a hit for this year. Not many compared to when Suebelle is left alone. Even the brown Turkey figs seemed to be light in amounts..they miss our normal warmer summers too. On the other hand-we're getting virtually frostless winters..the tradeoff with El or La Nina......See MoreMango Opinions
Comments (72)No, it's not dwarf. The only commonly sold mango trees that might fall into that category would be ice cream, pickering, julie, cogshall, and possibly nam doc mai #4. The LZ appears to be a compact grower, but that doesn't mean much. The carrie is also a compact grower, yet my 6-7 year old carrie tree is already approaching 15 feet tall and wide. Vigor also plays a big role. For container culture, one very important characteristic to consider is precocity. A mango tree in a pot that takes several years (and needs a large pot) to produce fruit is really nothing more than a glorified ornamental. I'm really fond of the pickering for it's habit of bringing fruit to maturity in a 3 to 7 gallon pot. The julie is also precocious, but it seems like the julie wants to be in a 15 gal pot before it will bring a fruit to maturity. The julie is also a pain in the neck to care for in a pot where the pickering is bulletproof. Jeff...See MoreSoCal/NorCal gathering of the CF forces.
Comments (66)Many creative people indeed, and the rest of us to admire their creativity. That does look like a very comfortable chair, Lars, and like barnmom, I'm imagining how silk/mohair would feel. And, back to food, is that triangle standing up on the side of the bowl the crunchy rice? Annie...See Moremangodog
