Advice on northern peach growing
Comments (3)Thanks for posting this. I'm glad to see that Madison is considered hardy. The injury on my peach tree that I have now is on the south west side of the trunk. Maybe I'll use a white tree guard on the next tree and it will last longer....See MoreThat hardy Bailey's Mango laughing at 34f cold.
Comments (14)Hi Mango_Kush and others: Yes, absolutely. Frozen ground would most likely kill a mango tree for sure. However, where I live, the ground never freezes, or even close to it. The coldest ground temperature IâÂÂve ever measured in my yard was last year and that was 40.5F at about four inches from the surface. However, my potted mango tree has had ground temperature readings of 35F and has not shown any signs of root problems. The ground here in Jacksonville stays around 55F average in January, during a cold year. Well, at least in my area of town. Other plants, my Barbados cherry, tamarind, and âÂÂCuban oreganoâ do not like ground temperatures to drop even into the 50âÂÂs. I can imagine that 35F in the ground for even a couple of nights would probably kill them⦠I use to have a potted seedling Mamey Sapote and it did not seem to like cold feet either. I got rid of it though, because I got a grafted Magaña, it is currently planted in ground and seems to do very well....See MoreMango Opinions
Comments (72)No, it's not dwarf. The only commonly sold mango trees that might fall into that category would be ice cream, pickering, julie, cogshall, and possibly nam doc mai #4. The LZ appears to be a compact grower, but that doesn't mean much. The carrie is also a compact grower, yet my 6-7 year old carrie tree is already approaching 15 feet tall and wide. Vigor also plays a big role. For container culture, one very important characteristic to consider is precocity. A mango tree in a pot that takes several years (and needs a large pot) to produce fruit is really nothing more than a glorified ornamental. I'm really fond of the pickering for it's habit of bringing fruit to maturity in a 3 to 7 gallon pot. The julie is also precocious, but it seems like the julie wants to be in a 15 gal pot before it will bring a fruit to maturity. The julie is also a pain in the neck to care for in a pot where the pickering is bulletproof. Jeff...See Moremango variety suggestions New Orleans (9b)
Comments (4)I get so stoked when I get a new mango tree. Ohhh and coming home from work to see the box on your doorstep.. like Christmas. It's hard to decide, so, get them all! Pickering is the only one I have from your list. I haven't had it long so I can't comment about the flavor because I haven't seen fruit from it yet, but one of the reasons I bought it was for the reputation of its flavor. I can say, that it's the healthiest & hardiest of all my mango trees so far and it was the fastest to recover from shipping and transplant shock. To be honest, it wasn't really fazed by shipping (4 days in transit) and transplant. Never lost a leaf and started flushing new growth almost right away. Whatever you decide, post pics of your new babies!...See Moremango_kush
