mango variety suggestions New Orleans (9b)

i want to buy 3 Mango trees in a few weeks
2 months tops (i cant wait)

In New Orleans we get a lot of rain and humidity
the rain stays all year round.
We are one of the highest rainfall cities in the USA.

the next problem is i am in zone 9b
it freezes here a couple times a year on average.
rarely under 28F for more than a few hours
the sun always warms things up down here.

i heard a fast growing vigorous p[plant is best
so, if there is any cold damage,
it will come back easier in spring.

i should really be trying to keep them all height restricted,
but, i have a spot i figure i can let at least one of them get rather large. the other 2 will have to be trimmed to
10-12ft and 12-15ft
that said, someone told me to get a vigorous plant, so that if it does get cold damaged, it will bounce back easily.

i was going to go with 3 from this list
(it took me a week to narrow it down to these )

Baileys Marvel
Best cold tolerance.
t has the same flavor with the Haden, with less fiber.
fruit are bigger and less prone to fungus problems.

developed in South Florida

I planted 14 mango trees over the past 12 years and the Glenn is by far the best grower and everyone's favorite. I planted it 12 years ago and last year I harvested over 150 mangoes from it. They normally come ready at the end of May thru June. I planted a Fairchild 5 years ago and it produces an excellent tasting mango. I have a Pickering and it has a very unique taste...mango flavor with a hint of coconut. Really good however it seems to be a slow grower.
Well that's my suggestions. By the way I planted a choc-onon 6 years ago the first year I had excellent tasting mangos at Christmas however I have only gotten a hand full of mangoes since then...

Hi Greenman,

My Choc Anon is moderately susceptible to Anthracnose. Consequently I must watch my ripening picked fruit carefully and eat it before the Anthracnose skin spots grow into the flesh. Unfortunately, sometimes that is before the fruit is fully ripe.

My advice is grow a Choc Anon if you want winter mangos (I just ate one this evening.) However, you may want to apply a fungicide (I use copper) from the start of pinnacle formation until the fruit is set. Also, you will want to keep the ants off. They will cultivate and defend scale insects for the sweet honeydew they exude. Tanglefoot is non-toxic and effective.

Violet, i'm sure rick knows how to do a google search...... Rick, bush beans are green bean plants that stay low to the ground as opposed to vining up 6+ feet, like pole beans. they also yield one or maybe two harvests per season, as opposed to pole beans, which produce continuously through the summer. i personally think pole beans taste better (and are prettier, because of the constant flowering), but that's just my opinion. my raised beds are twice as deep as yours.......do yours have a hard bottom, or are they sitting on top of dirt? in other words, do the roots have someplace to go other than the 6" depth of the raised bed? you could grow globe radishes, short n' sweet carrots, beets for the greens, leaf lettuce, peas....althought it might be a little hot for peas/radishes in zone 9......cucumbers have always been a no-brainer with high yields for me as well, that might be something to try. this year i'm have burpee's bushmaster to save space. you could probably grow whatever you wanted, but if the bed is truly 6" deep, if it's a box sitting on your driveway or something, plants like tomatoes and peppers, broccoli will be stunted due to lack of root space. Many varieties are grown(endemic) in India. Worldwide, Alphonso is considered the best in taste(also less fibrous). However,Most Indians like a variety called 'Langda' in western/northern India and 'Malda' in eastern India. There are many sub-strains of this variety called 'safed malda','Kalkatia malda','Lal malda','Bambaia malda' etc. 'Dussery' is another excellent variety (mainly grown in Uttar Pradesh in India. In the state of Bihar, famous varieties are 'Kishanbhog', 'Sipia','Malbhog' etc which are extremely good. All these mangoes differ in flavour, size, colour etc. Alphonso is the one to ripen perhaps the first i.e in April. Malda(almost all of them) ripen in June. A person can try these mangoes in India and then settle upon his/her favourite flavour. Personally, I like 'Safed Malda' the most and many a times foregone regular meals due to overeating this variety.

stanofh, i want to put it in ground. i have a greenhouse, but my back is too bad to move huge pots. i have one in a 10 gallon, about 4ft tall or more. its a Florigon from seed. it survived 26F for a few hours with minor leaf damage, but it doesnt mean it will fruit. those temps might kill the flowers or small fruit (i dunno when that variety flowers) I have a couple of Ataulfo mango growing from seed. they are the small yellow ones found at most stores. usually called Champagne mango. i know they grow them in Mexico for market. they taste pretty good too for a store mango. I was hoping someone who lived here, or at least in zone 9 could share experience.

There seem to be a lot of one-of-a-kind things in the front yard that aren't working together as a team. I would have less variety, but bigger, bolder, fewer things. I would ditch the bed that's between the driveway and entrance in favor of expanding beds off of each corner of the house. I'm showing palms in the beds off of the house corners. But it doesn't have to be palms. It could be another type of tree cluster or multi-trunk. Don't know what to tell you about the trees in the front yard. We can't see them completely, but they seem to be misshapen or oddly shaped. Not sure if they are contributing in a positive way. Not sure if they can be made to do that.

I get so stoked when I get a new mango tree. Ohhh and coming home from work to see the box on your doorstep.. like Christmas. It's hard to decide, so, get them all! Pickering is the only one I have from your list. I haven't had it long so I can't comment about the flavor because I haven't seen fruit from it yet, but one of the reasons I bought it was for the reputation of its flavor. I can say, that it's the healthiest & hardiest of all my mango trees so far and it was the fastest to recover from shipping and transplant shock.

To be honest, it wasn't really fazed by shipping (4 days in transit) and transplant. Never lost a leaf and started flushing new growth almost right away. Whatever you decide, post pics of your new babies!

Greenman - i would go with Alphonso, Valencia Pride and LEMON ZEST (my most incredible tasting mango)...my Golden Nugget tasted chalky to me last year, but it was it's first crop....
