Med. stained cherry cabinets w/ carrera marble...what floor???
Comments (10)A pedestal tub and cherry cabinets can be either traditional or contemporary - which direction are you going? If you were going traditional, riffing off Bill's idea, what about one of the larger hexes, 2" (Daltile Keystone Shapes) or even 4" (can't remember who makes it but I know someone here in the last two years used it)? American Olean "Chloe" mosaic with the white or silver-gray centers would also be pretty. If money's very tight, the white-on-white version of Daltile Octagon-and-Dot, which is quite inexpensive, would provide plenty of visual texture and, with a silvery gray grout, enough pattern to keep it from being a dull white floor. However, I think the carrara counter might get lost against a white or white-and-gray floor. If you're leaning toward something more contemporary, I think a slate-look porcelain with a gray-blue base and brown accents in it, like American Olean "Earthscapes" in Rainforest, would look really smashing. Blue is a wonderful complement to cherry and the gray would tie back to the gray in the marble. Green tones are also wonderful with cherry - maybe Daltile "Continental Slate" in Brazilian Green (this has a matching mosaic for a shower floor) has enough gray to pick up the marble veining as well as green and brown to complement the cherry. Or something slicker would be a sort of concrete-ish look, like Daltile's "City View" in "Downtown Nite" which is sort of a medium gray. Daltile's "Donegal" in Grigio would be a subtle but not dull floor, in a silvery gray to pick up the marble veining; it would allow many other things to star and keep the feel of the room lighter. How much maintenance are you willing to deal with? A large-format charcoal gray (like Daltile "Era" in Olos) on the floors would make the cherry glow and both the carrara marble and the white tub "pop" as the "stars of the show", but a really dark color does show every trace of lint and hair and soap scum. I could see it as well for the shower - a colorbody porcelain tile could be cut down to the appropriate size by your tile setter, since you need smaller tiles for traction - with a decorative band or two of carrara tiles horizontally around the shower and as a border on the floor to get the maximum impact from a minimum amount of the more expensive stone. Since your room is so big, you could get away with a big tile - the "Era" tile comes in a 12x24 that could be laid in a common brick or a herringbone pattern which would look amazing. Daltile "Veranda" is a pretty reliable tile, in Gunmetal or Patina for the darker look, or Steel for the lighter look to blend with the countertop. It comes in a 6x20" which could be used to create some really great patterns. There are a lot of great tiles on the market, BTW, I'm just most familiar with Dal and AO's lines, they're very easy to find and for the most part reasonably priced. (If you're interested in something from Daltile, watch Home Depot for their 20% off all special order flooring sales, as this includes all tile. Their prices beat the living ahem out of any of the tile stores when I ordered my Daltile tile there. It's exactly the same tile as you would get in a tile store, don't let anyone tell you it's inferior.) Did you have any plans for the main bathroom's walls? Tiled wainscot, just paint, special finishes like Venetian plaster?...See MoreWhere have all the classic deep red cherry cabinets gone?
Comments (23)Shantharam...a lot depends on where you live...do you want stock, semi-custom, or custom...etc. This is probably too late for you, but I thought I'd try answering your question for you anyway just in case & maybe help others out as well! Ours are Omega semi-custom from EXPO Design Center. But if you check the Omega site you'll be able to locate dealers in your area. I suspect all cabinet makers have similar dealer locators on their websites. Many people have had great luck with small, local cabinetmakers...getting custom for the cost of semi-custom or even stock cabinets...BUT, be sure to check their work before committing. You do often get what you pay for! HTH!...See MoreOkay to have cherry crown molding w/ painted window casings?
Comments (16)While in pics my molding appears to be similar to the walls, they're actually very different in person. The walls have a significant amount of texture and color in them and the wood is of course smooth and shiny and different in tone. I also have the opposite in my victorian where the crown molding is painted but the doors and trim are not. Again, no racing stripes. Now in that last kitchen....we don't see the kitchen well. Personally it does get that racing thing visually from a computer because it appears that the chair rail, base board and crown are all the same, with no differentation in the wallcovering or color between, hence the stripe. Now closer up we might find that the lower area has a texture that defines it....which might make it work nicely in person, but on the computer, it does look terrible. But that's the chair rail. Remove it from the pic and you have no race stripes. Boring room maybe :P But no stripes ;) IMO Painting that molding would do nothing to effect the stripe issue. Painting the walls (lower) a different color to accentuate the molding would solve the issue immediately :) But it's again a different issue since the OP does not have a chair rail problem. I have several rooms with different molding colors on the window verses the crown, as well as rooms where the crown and the toe don't match. They look lovely. No stripes :) just nice finishes designed to work within the room they're in. The reason the house flows well though is because I kept the main trim (windows) the same color. In this case the OP can do either and either will look nice. Because the mantle build out is the same color as the molding it would flow well together, but given it's also a specific item (mantel) it can have that furniture look by painting the other molding and leaving it the wood tone on the actual mantel portion. Mantel? Mantle? Manaties? gad I'm a spelling idiot!...See MoreAnyone have cherry stained cabinets w/ new venetian gold granite?
Comments (19)Ok Guys, I went back to the design center today and here are some new choices: Tumbled Marble Subway Tile Emperador Brown: The tumbled marble also comes in 4"X4". OR Tumbled travertine 4"X4" Chocolate color: I emailed the designer to ask of the trvertine came in subway tiles, too. Hopefully, she will get back to me soon. My pics of the floor tile did not come out great this time, but here is is with two different carpet choices (in the design center it was almost identical to the carpet on the right, but in the pic it looks identical to the carpet on the left!): Also, I came across this REALLY pretty mosiac tile (I have NO idea how much any of this costs, I've put in an email to the designer to see!). I was thinking of getting one of the 4"X4" tiles (either the marble or the travertine) as the backsplash and then having them put one of these mosaic tiles centered over the stove cooktop. What do you guys think? Here's a pic of the mosaic tile: If the mosaic is too expensive, then I think I may go with subway tiles for the backsplash. I think the subway tiles would look wierd with the mosaic. Let me know what you guys think! You have been really helpful so far! Thanks so much!...See MoreUser
