I put and an accent over my stove. Before the tile was dry, I couldn't stand it. It came down, but then we couldn't fill in the space in the brick patttern of the subways and I had to find little mosaics in the same color to fill the space. And for all kinds of reasons, including money to redo the whole wall, we had to leave some of the terrible accent tiles near the ceiling and under the hood. So be careful. Simple is always better.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

Hey a2, thanks for continuing to be a fan of my kitchen. Emajination, love your granite and love the mosaic too. Mosaics don't get a lot of love on this forum. It seems that the majority of GWers think that mosaics are too busy and/ or that they will look dated. There would be nothing wrong with doing something simple, plain, and neutral but if it doesn't make your heart sing then you may want to just go with what does. As a2gemini mentioned above, I have a mosaic behind my cooktop. It is a mix of glass, stone and stainless. While my countertop does not have flowing veins in it, it does have lots of splotches of blue/green, black and gold in it. I opted to put the mosaic just behind the cooktop and vent hood all the way to the ceiling. I wanted it to be a focal point in my kitchen. I thought that having the mosaic between the rest of my countertop and cabinet areas would be too much of a good thing. My sink is in my island (another thing frowned upon by many GWers), so no need for a backsplash there. I think that the mosaic you have would look great behind your range and hood but would be mosaic overload if you put it everywhere. If you think you need protection behind your sink maybe could you get another piece of you granite to put in the location. I would make it just the width of the window and have it go up to the window trim. If you can't get more granite maybe you could use a piece of clear glass or back painted glass in that area. Can't wait to see what you decide to do. In the meantime here is a shot of my mosaic.

The aqua tile is actually a porcelain tile, not glass. It is a little shinier than I wanted. I would prefer a matte tile. Suzyq53 - I love the color of your tile. Beautiful kitchen!! Calidesign - Love the photos. I think I will keep looking for a tile that is a little lighter in color than the sample I have. My sister-in-law suggested that I find a paint match to the tile I like and paint the backsplash wall to see if I like it before I commit to the tile. Think I may give it a try. A dry run! :)
