New house, lawn not so great, not sure where to start - zone 5b

We are in Northern IL. We moved to a new house a year ago.

The previous owner was no lawn guru. I am not either - not yet! There are a
number of issues that need to be addressed and I am not sure which is best to
start with.

The lot is .7 acres and I figure taking out the house,
driveway, flowerbeds and trees I have around 15k square feet to deal with. It
is about a 60/40 split between part shade and sun. One of the issues I have is
a mixture of different species. It is like the previous owners would have a
dead patch and then go get a different bag of seed every time so as you walk
around all these patches are quite obvious. So one thing I want to accomplish
over time is to get it more uniform.

There are a lot of weeds - mostly creeping charlie and
clover but some others that I don't know what they are. The few dandelions I
had were handled by the treatments I tried.

I did a couple treatments during the late spring and summer
of different products. One was left by the previous owner. The previous owner
had left behind some Trimec lawn weed killer as well as a Ortho chickweed
specific one. I used both in different areas since there was not enough of
either to cover the whole lawn. I also
bought and used Ortho Weed-b-Gone. I was mostly using a pump sprayer to spread
them. They all had some combination of 2,4-D, MCPP, Dicamba and/or triclopyr
(assuming I spelled those right). Other than dandelions all the weeds just
laughed at me.

So given all my issues I am not sure where to start. Fall is
just starting which I know is good for seeding. But I want to tackle the weeds
also - but most weed treatments say not to seed for 6 weeks

I am open to suggestions.
