They want 2 put new subfloor/floor on top of brand new one - long
Comments (29)You can pick out that filler depending on what they used - I tried it just to make sure in case we wanted to use something else/tile in the future as I used a lot of screws. I didn't want the kitchen higher than the living room. It would be a nightmare to do, but you can do it. The luan is what is causing the problem - that needs to be pulled up and replaced with plywood not luan. Standard practice is luan and no one we talked to was willing to use nicer plywood even at our insistance. Luan is the smooth surface - the didn't need to use something different. We made the choice to use better plywood as we choose DIY/better materials with the money we saved on labor (so, we probably aren't saving any money and its a lot of work, but we are getting some better stuff). Even if you put the vinyl under the cabinets, vinyl is easy to cut, but it also depends if they used the glue down method vs. tape. We taped ours down just in case I wanted to change my mind in the future or we ruined it redoing the hardwood floors or something else given we are redoing the rest of the house. We glued our one seam under the fridge and we probably didn't need vinyl under there but we have the ice maker and I know what's under there (I also put it under the oven but not dishwasher except where I could reach). The real questions are how did the put it down and they probably are trying to do what is easiest for them. I would want the 1/4 inch luan removed and replaced with 1/4 plywood, screw down (not nail) with deck screws so they will not rust and are solid and they need to be counter-sinked, it filled (let it set for a few days), sanded smooth, then use the tape method for the vinyl, cover with molding. (I did everything but lifting the plywood and the molding myself (husband did that), so it is an easy thing to do, so don't let them tell you how hard it is and I am not a big woman). Putting down vinyl is one of the easiest things we've done (and windows surprisingly). Debi, were you the one who they put the wrong color in? If you were, I'm not so sure given this is the second mistake, I'd want them fixing it....See MoreHow to receive cabinets and where to put them?
Comments (4)Our kitchen renovation involves the kitchen and adjoining family room, so I had the cabinets brought in and stored on the family room side, so they could be out of the way while they were being installed in the kitchen. I had them set in three rows. I planned ahead and made sure the "key" cabinets (the ones I thought my contractor would install first) were placed in the rows last, so my contractor could get to them without moving every cabinet. I grouped the rows by each wall (sink wall, rangetop wall and refrigerator wall), so that there was some organization when looking for the next cabinet. The cabinets I thought would be installed first were the corner base cabinet, the sink base (because it was being centered under windows) and the wall cabinets. It worked out very well and avoided the necessity of repeatedly moving the cabinets. My husband and I opened each cabinet (wrapped in paper and padding) and checked for damage and made sure everything was as ordered. The delivery company was not too thrilled, but we insisted since the full balance was due at that time. Another tip I received from someone on this forum (can't remember exactly who), is to have two checks ready if you are required to pay by bank check. This way if there is a problem, you can withhold a small amount until it is fixed, rather than having to pay the balance in full and hope for the best. Hope this helps!...See MoreNew Cabinets are Installed!
Comments (13)Adrienne, the ceiling only needed to be textured where the fluorescent light fixture came out. The walls that were wall-papered before needed new texture. Somehow, they did it as if the cabinets were super-sized, not the regular depth. I don't know why they missed that. There's a strip about 6" wide along two cabinets that will need to be fixed later. It sort of defeats the purpose of doing it early if you botch it that badly. I would have preferred to paint last after everything else is done, when I could properly choose the paint color. Now I will have to do that myself. Luckily, it's only a small amount of wall....See MoreHow did you decide where to put knobs and pulls?
Comments (16)Pinktoes, My widest drawer is 30" wide on the drawer beneath the combo wall oven, it only has a single pull centered according to the rules above. Although at the end of the kitchen I have a 44" wide recycling drawer with six bins inside. For that since it is faced with two separate doors, it got two pulls. But to tell the truth I still only pull on one of them to open it. I think it is purely an aesthetics issue. I think that if you need to have two pulls on a drawer and need to pull evenly on both of them to avoid racking the drawer or bending the drawer slides, especially on newly constructed cabinets, then you need to find a less crappy cabinet maker. With that said, I agree that the handle layout shown above by gardenergwen is the right decision for that bank of cabinets....See MoreLyndy
