How to receive cabinets and where to put them?

This feels like a ridiculous question, especially since we did a kitchen reno in 2005! But I can't remember what we did then, and this kitchen is bigger and $$$er. Anyway, DH received the fridge and range and did not have the delivery guys open the box to inspect them for delivery damage; the 48 hour window for reporting such damage has passed. I opened the DW yesterday and it is undented and looks good, so yay for that.

Cabs arrive tomorrow (Thurs) and demo starts Monday, with cabs expected to go in on Wednesday or so. Do I have them delivered to my garage and fully uncrated/boxed so I can evaluate everything? I'm thinking that the bottoms of the uppers will be scratched if I do that. Keep them on a cardboard carpet? If we get the furniture out of the LR and move the dining table into the LR, we could probably have them put in the DR (what we did last time), which would be more convenient for the contractor, I guess. I feel like there is more chance of damage if they are put in the garage and unboxed tomorrow, then have to be taken through 3 doorways into the kitchen unboxed in a week. Regardless, the corner and sink base will have to be rolled around the side of the garage on the grass and brought through the wider patio door.

Anyway, thanks for any procedural tips, like "make sure to check XX for notoriously common damage" or whatever!

We left ours in the boxes for a month in the garage to keep them protected. When the install started we found a piece of trim broken and one drawer had a small scratch. Our cabinet dealer ordered replacements and they arrived in ten days. He did not even want us to send back the bad pieces. He explained that they always expect a few dents and nicks with most orders. Keeping them in the box protected them from me doing any damage plus protected them as they were moved into the kitchen.

Our kitchen renovation involves the kitchen and adjoining family room, so I had the cabinets brought in and stored on the family room side, so they could be out of the way while they were being installed in the kitchen. I had them set in three rows. I planned ahead and made sure the "key" cabinets (the ones I thought my contractor would install first) were placed in the rows last, so my contractor could get to them without moving every cabinet. I grouped the rows by each wall (sink wall, rangetop wall and refrigerator wall), so that there was some organization when looking for the next cabinet. The cabinets I thought would be installed first were the corner base cabinet, the sink base (because it was being centered under windows) and the wall cabinets. It worked out very well and avoided the necessity of repeatedly moving the cabinets.

My husband and I opened each cabinet (wrapped in paper and padding) and checked for damage and made sure everything was as ordered. The delivery company was not too thrilled, but we insisted since the full balance was due at that time.

Another tip I received from someone on this forum (can't remember exactly who), is to have two checks ready if you are required to pay by bank check. This way if there is a problem, you can withhold a small amount until it is fixed, rather than having to pay the balance in full and hope for the best. Hope this helps!

If you don't mind the reading http://sialis.org/ is a great site. 3/4" electrical conduit (10' length cut in half) over a length of rebar pounded about a foot into the ground. Mount the box to the pipe with a 3/4" bracket. This helps with the predator problem. Some people steel wool the pipe and coat with car wax. If you attach to trees, you get predators-snakes, squirrels, cats-to name a few. You need to check the boxes periodically to make sure you are not hosting a non native hostile species (like the house sparrow). Generally, if you can't monitor the box, you are doing a GREAT disservice to our native songbirds, blue birds included. Please do the research-it is well worth it. Oh no, not again... Superchick is not asking whether we approve of this placement. She has a specific question about the logistics. I don't beleive any other topic generates more controversey than this one: in a nation that celebrates its diversity, it almost seems as though the placement of our televisions is the one subject about which we must all walk in lock step. If anyone wants to advocate for or against this hot button topic, they ought to first read the hundreds of posts-- many tinged with rage and disdain-- in the archives that address the issue. If there is really anything new to add, start a new thread rather than dragging this one hopelessly off course. And as to the actual question at hand, space is probably needed for your DVD player and receiver, possibly surround sound unit, and VCR. If the fireplace and cabs are designed as an integrated whole, it will probably be fine. I would avoid having the cabinetry protrude further than the television, and I'd try to keep things symetrical [but then, I'm a full blown symetriholic].

Though you're not required to comply since this is your residence, ADA guidelines might help. For shower stalls, grab bars are installed running horizontally. 33" to 36" above the floor. The shower controls in ADA showers are located 38" to 48" above the floor and within 18" of the door opening.

First of all, joining needs to be done carefully, so I advise you to sit where you can place your pieces together in front of you, such as at the kitchen table. I join in the same order as the great example above in Alice's message. I always leave very long tails to sew seams. I hold the pieces to be joined with wrong sides facing each other. Then I take one stitch into the edge going from the top to the bottom of the first stitch on that piece's edge. Then I go across and stitch from top to bottom on the top stitch of the other piece I am joining. Pull the yarn tail just snug but not too tightly, and repeat. Once you put a garment together this way, it will seem easier to you and you can probably do it on your lap as you watch TV. If you don't have any binder clips to use, I use long corsage pins I have saved over the years from my daughter's corsages and her wedding and from my sons's boutineres. But I suspect that the binder clips are even better help.

Hmm, the cabinets are already paid through the kitchen design store. Maybe I'll put a blanket down on the DR floor and have the "first phase" and biggest cabinets set in there, and let the contractor guys work for their huge installation bucks and dolly the rest of the cabinets around the side and back of the house.

Ours went into the living room and foyer. They sat there for a week or two. Like billp1 damage was slight and dealer replaced quickly.

I'd advise blankets down. We had a little scratching of the floors since the bottoms are just the cabinet toe kick bottoms and not wrapped in cardboard or anything.
