Overall, I'm not seeing any other color other than brown, beige and black here, so I think you need to bring to bring in some lightness and also an accent shade. I'd do floor length panels in cream on the dining room window, and a lighter shade rug with maybe some greens (all found on Wayfair):

Also, I agree with Beverly that the corner cabinet should definitely go as well.

Balanced beige goes well with Aesthetic white. So I would go with this color scheme for curtains and rug.

The room seems to be begging for more color/pattern, and the best place for that would be the rug. It's a very pretty room but a bit bland. I would choose cream drapes rather than white, perhaps with a self pattern, and a rug with cream and subdued blues, greens and even terrracotta to liven the room up. A large painting as shown or a gallery wall of paintings on the left wall are necessary for balance and visual interest.

A dining room rug should have at least 24 inches of extra room on all sides of the dining table to allow enough space for guests to pull out chairs without tripping over the rug. An even wider border is ideal.

Beverly, Im not really huge on colors for the main pieces in the room. Id rather use decor for pops of color, especially since I decorate a lot for different seasons and holidays. I like keeping everything pretty neutral but I definitely needed to bring some light into the room and I think the rug and curtains are really going to make a difference.

It would be great to see a rug, window treatments, and a big piece of art opposite the buffet. Is it possible to remove the corner cabinet?

If you have a large collection of art a gallery wall can also be a good solution for your empty space to the left. If that isn't an option a large mirror or oversized art piece will also do the trick.

I might not have come up with the same choices you have, but I like what you selected. It's okay to have a soft or subdued dining room. It's a restful look and that's a good back drop for food and dining.

Miranda, you should be happy, what an improvement. Since you have the one picture on the right, I would suggest something more like a gallery wall on the left so that the sides are not matching. The one other item might be something decorative on the table to break up that long expanse.

I do like the choices you've made so far, but no to a clock in the dining room. It makes one feel they are being timed. As Beverly suggested upthread, the art (and sconces) over the console should be lowered.

We have a grandfather clock in our dining room. Does not make us feel rushed but is nice to know the time when we are in there. No one wears watches anymore so otherwise we'd have to get up to check or look at our phones which we don't like to do. But I don't know how I would feel about a huge one. I know I don't like my mirror in there.

Edited to add that mirrors are great but not when they are eye level and you sit watching yourself eat. That's what I have because my mirror is on a dresser I am using as a sideboard. It's the only place for this heirloom in my house. I have stuff in front of the mirror but not enough. I always end up on the seat opposite the mirror because no one else wants it. A word of caution.

Definitely lower the artwork and maybe place the flower votives on a different wall? You could put a couple of tall buffet lamps on either side of the artwork.
