large leaf shrubs to replace H Endless Summers?
Comments (13)I like my Witch Hazels, nice leaves and terrific fall color. Depending on the type, you can have fall blooming, and late winter flowers. I like the flash of color in the dreary late winter landscape. My Diane has fairly large leaves. I have been pretty happy with the Tardiva H. in shaded or slight shade locations. Not as droopy in heat, but might need some watering if very dry. Another idea would be grasses. I have been real happy with the striped ones, which I forgot the name of. Taller at 4-5ft, with yellow bands on the leaves. I like the color mix, and grass only needs shearing once a year. Seems quite hardy here in my Michigan location, exposed to all the wind and cold of winter. Movement in wind could give a little motion to the attractive bed in your picture. My ESummers seem to need a lot of sun and water. Droop fast. They are OK, but I expected better. Still may have a bit too much shade, though both are together and do flower on each stick but not big or heavily. This is their 3rd year there. I stick my reject plants beside the road in pots with labels and FREE. Someone always takes them!!...See MoreNew green leaves dying on Macro/Buttons & Bows
Comments (9)Hey Lerissa- I just read your reply to me. My B&B ended up with FIVE blooms, it is only about 1 1/4 ft tall! It is so funny seeing this huge flower head on such a small "bush". This was the only macro I did the winter protection on(put a wire fence around it & filled w/leaves last fall) I also had put in a new macro this year called "pink ribbons"(search for the thread), there I have a pic posted of it next to a potted B&B I had bought at Walmart this year. It looks like a B&B, but the sepals are smaller & more pointed-looks like it's in the "Frau" series according to my Hydrangea Encylcopedia. As for Endless Summer, I finally did break down & buy one at Walmart, I just planted it last weekend-it is VERY floppy at this stage. I haven't decided if I really like it or not. My approx 8 yr old Preziosa is my #1 favorite this year, I am going to try to post some pics-it is gorgeous! Speaking of Frank's I don't know if you remember or not but I work at a dental office that was next door to Frank's-well I sure do miss it! They have put in a "furniture warehouse" What a joke!...See MoreIs Endless Summer A Bust?
Comments (129)Hi everyone. I'm extremely new to gardening and plants period! As any new person, I went out and just bought plants and didn't do any research! However, I bought these hydrangeas at Lowe's and the frist pic is how they looked like when i first bought them. Gorgeous, with tons of potential. Now the 2nd and last pic are what they currently are looking like. I don't know if it's me (which my husband swears i'm killing them!). I mean, the first couple of weeks i watered them well until i felt they were 'established' I've already fertilized tehm because I saw them turning all sorts of ugly colors and they have morning sun and afternoon shade. I'm also not sure if its the barand I bought, which I think was the forever maroon bucket at Lowe's. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. OH and yesterday I dug up my last one which is the one that is the last pic and put it in a container and replaced it with another hydrangea that I bought at Walmart, they were in a blue bucket....See MoreAC went bad...should I replace whole old system? Comments (38)My compressor also went 1 1/2 weeks ago. I was not too upset at first because I was leaving to go to the Cape. However, I cannot stand the heat since coming back and I finally broke down and had a HVAC guy come out. It is the compressor as we thought. The freeon is full. The label on the outside says it was made in 1989 so I guess at 22 years old it lasted well. We bought this house 2 years ago and it seems everything has recently started to need to be replaced. We will be having our roof done soon. Anyways, my question is also whether I should just replace the compressor or update to a new energy efficient a.c.. The a.c. we have now is a HEIL. My furnace (oil) is a thermo pride and I believe it was replaced in 2007. The house was built in 1984. It is a raised ranch with a up and down in-law that does not run off this furnace (it has its own gas furnace). There is also a lower level apt. that is also seperate with it's own furnace (oil). However, my apt. space and the lower level tenant share the same oil tank. We only have central air. The in-law and lower apt. do not. I think my a.c. unit is a 1 ton. The service man quoted me $800 inclusive to put in a new compressor. He also said he had an old ? 6 years model a.c. (not just the compressor)that he recently took out of someones place when they updated theirs for a more energy efficient one. He said he'd give me a 1 year warranty and it would cost $5oo.oo for this used one. I did not ask for a quote on a new one because we need the money for the new roof He is suppose to be calling me back to let me know for sure the age of the old unit. Any advise would be appreciated.
