Endless Summer Hydrangea not blooming
Comments (25)Just wanted to mention that I DID get a lot of bloom on my two well-established Endless Summers last season. Most of the bloom was early, as Calliope said, followed by a small amount of later bloom sprinkled throughout the remaining season with some still opening late in fall. This year I got only a small amount of bloom along the brick wall side of the shrubs (as I previously posted) and NO additional bloom yet as of late August. A few branch stems do have some tiny buds. Last year I had buds in all stages of development at this time of year plus fresh opening flowers. So ES has not been a total bust for me, as macrophyllas do not generally bloom at all here (unless heavily protected or you are just plain very lucky). In an earlier home closer into the metro area I did inherit an unknown Hydrangea macrophylla that did occasionally (every 3 years or so) put out a handful of blooms for me. My ESs are on the east side of my house along the brick wall, but received no other protection and have never been fertilized, except one year when I used Aluminum sulfate (if that counts) to turn them blue. Worked pretty well....See MoreBlushing Bride Hydrangea
Comments (14)I bought two this year. I planted one in full shade and one in part sun. The full shade one is gorgeous. Everyone asks what it is. The part sun one is so withered that I need to move it this weekend before it dies. I'm in northern California and get very hot sun all summer. Temperature yesterday was 102 with dry heat. It will be near 100 all week, then drop down into the 90's. If they're in full shade, mine has done well as has the Endless Summer I also planted in full shade. The part sun versions of both need to be moved. I'd say the Endless Summer took it better than the Blushing Bride. Very beautiful bush and it is repeat blooming. I liked it so much I bought my mom one for her birthday. Debbie...See MoreEndless Summer: NOT a Bust!
Comments (30)I am in Canada, Zone 3. The winter gets to -30F and colder with windchill, and there's a lot of wind. I still have my plants in pots, just bought this year. So, I was thinking of putting them in the attic, which would probably keep them within their zone requirements.( I assume they need to go dormant??) I don't have the heated garage the nursery suggests, unless they're gonna build it for me. I hope this works. Any suggestions are very welcome!! As for bloom or bust, my ESs quit blooming after I removed the blooms for a bouquet. I fertilized, but similar to another member, just got more leaf growth. Maybe they are just too young of plants. And, I mistreated them in a heat wave, too. Lots of wilt, and some crunchy leaves. I figured they were punishing me!...See MoreEndless Summer Hydrangeas
Comments (20)I was exactly where you are last year. I had bought my hydrangeas blooming, and for a few years in a row they had leaves but no flowers. They were in full sun and I could not water them easily at that location, they were far from the house. So, last spring I have moved them close to the house, where I can water them. They get shade in the morning, and a bit too much sun in the mid day and afternoon. But they are planted under a young birch that will provide shade in a few years. Anyway, last year, after spring transplanting, I watered and fed them and they made one bloom between 3 hydrangeas. They were still stressed from the previous year. This year was to be their last. They all died back during winter. I fertilized them with an organic rose food in the spring (same as wendy above - maybe that's key?), and voila! They bloomed incessantly this summer... amazing season they are having! They are still stressed out by too much mid-day and afternoon sun. I water them every afternoon if they wilt. But, they bloomed! So, my lesson learned is that they need some shade, a lot of water, and fertilizer as well. My soil is sandy, well drained, slightly acidic and poor in nutrients. You may have to give yours one more year after transplanting to a better location... Anda...See Moremxk3 z5b_MI
