bathroom tile FAQ's
Comments (64)I changed the entrance of my shower tub. The panel board was moldy; water was getting in between the top tiles and the panel board. the joint was not well sealed. I put new everything for the entrance, even a membrane between the plywood and the tiles. However, it seems to leak from the wall now. Water is coming out of the wall outside the shower tub. Would it be the grout, tiles...? Tiles and grout are probably 20+ yrs old ( turquoise tiles). I tried to put some ready grout ( in a tube), but it still leaks! Calking is well done. Should I remove the old grout and put new one everywhere? Thanks for your help!...See MoreTile most of the bathroom or tile the entire bathroom?
Comments (17)Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer....See MoreDesigner Opinion Please. LVP or Porcelain Floor in Bathroom
Comments (58)Thank you, all. I thought a lot about all the feedback and about what SJ said about when/where/how to utilize wood planking if I like that look. I considered buying the whole house’s tile now, in case it’s discontinued, but that’s not what I want to do now. Storing a ton of boxes and feeling like I have a gun to my head to install them before I’m ready for the rest of the transition isn’t part of the plan. I went to a tile store (not big box or outlet) and bought a beautiful porcelain 12x24 similar to what Beverly showed in the second picture. It’s strategic because it’s in the master color scheme we are transitioning to and this bath is buffered from the rest of the house by a bedroom with carpet. So, in the event it’s discontinued, it will still flow and feel cohesive later provided I stay in the same color plan. This was a very helpful thread that indeed changed my mind from when I posted. Thanks again....See MoreWhy porcelain bathroom tile has dark / wet spot?
Comments (31)Hey sam, what ended up happening with this? I just finished a bathroom reno a couple weeks ago and I noticed the same kind of thing on some but not all of my vertical subway tiles on the edges in certain areas of the shower. I noticed it after a long shower. I waterproofed everything behind the tile, used hardibacker with redgard and a quality modified thinset as well as one of the best grouts on the market (can be used in pools) Did you end up leaving it? Is it still holding up?...See Moremfran12345 (Zone 6b, northeast PA)
