New This Week: 3 Bathrooms With Showstopping Floor Tile
Caution: These stunning tile collections might give you neck cramps from staring at the floor for too long
Other special features. Double trough vanity sink. Frameless shower. Shower niche with the same tile as the floor.
Designer secret. “Nobody likes turning the shower valve on and having the cold water pour down on them before they get into the shower,” designer Alexandria Hubbard says. “One designer secret we incorporated into this space is the location of the shower valve. We wanted to keep in mind where our client would step in and turn the water on versus the shower head placement. We had two things to consider. We had to keep the shower head in the existing location, and to keep costs down wanted to hinge the shower glass off of a wall. So the compromise? We separated the shower valve and shower head by putting them on opposite walls, so a person could open the shower door, turn the valve on and wait for the water to heat up without having to get wet.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “Working in a condo building can be tricky, as it is not always possible to move water and drain lines,” designer MJ Englert says.“The toilet was on an exterior wall, and we could not move the toilet stack from the floor into the wall — discovered after demolition. We had to pad out the wall behind the toilet to allow for the plumbing, and we decided during construction to only build the wall halfway up to allow a shelf for storage and display and a nice place to hide an outlet.”
Tile: Tangier, Fez and Marrakesh patterns in Baltic color, Eastern Promise collection, Ann Sacks; sink: Wymara, MTI

3. Wavy Wonder
Designer: Jennifer Morris of JMorris Design
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Size: 35 square feet (3.3 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. Get rid of a freestanding tub and pedestal sink, and strip the old, dysfunctional bathroom to the studs to create a brighter, happier space with a larger shower.
Floor tile. Cement with a wavy aqua-and-gray pattern. “The floor tile was the first thing we selected, and it was so pretty and bold, we picked support tiles and fixtures that wouldn’t compete,” designer Jennifer Morris says.
Other special features. Porcelain shower floor tile. Large white wall tile. Skylight.
Designer secret. “The house is prewar, which you get a hint of from the radiator,” Morris says. “We carefully picked the shower body and faucet to give nods to this style and have traditional lines.”
Floor tile: cement, Waterworks; shower tile: Daltile; vanity and sink: Ronbow
