"Fluff" post: lampshades
I go for retro and "granny" chic ones. I do like pleated ones, but they are difficult to clean. The one in the second photo I got at a thrift store. Also I don't do lampshade covers. My late aunt used to make them and sell them at craft shows. Let's discuss lampshades.

8 years agoInteresting topic, I am trying to replace or repair a very specific type of lamp shade that was popular in the 1970s, the pagoda style lamp shade:
I have two Tang Dynasty style horse lamps that have a similar shade in a pale almond green. My mother bought these in your neck of the woods- Chicago- at a place called Asia House in 1980. I love those lamps and hope I can get the shades back in shape :-)

Comments (49)There's nothing scary about tap water from a commercial or municipal source. Purity and safety monitoring are required to be ongoing. It's very rare for anyone to get sick from water freshly taken from such sources. The Grand Rapids situation is a major exception/aberration. Water from a private well, different story. Very many of these sources can be chemically or bacteriologically unhealthy, especially those near agricultural areas where commonly tapped aquifers frequently get contaminated with crop chemicals and runoff from animal waste. Distilled water is cheap but boiling tap water for several minutes will produce the same, nearly sterile result perfectly suitable for use for mixing in hand soap. Comments (52)I don't find this either new nor worthy of thought, it's been long known. I've read that the highest incidence of problems tends to be found in small towns, smaller community hospitals, and larger understaffed public hospitals. A contributing problem is that the medical boards of many states don't allow public access to complaints, investigations, and disciplinary actions against physicians. Such information could be most useful to know which ones to avoid because of past problems. The secrecy is beginning to change in many places due to public pressure for sunshine on these records. The best thing for patients to do isn't to fool themselves into thinking they can become an amateur physician for themselves, that's folly and probably the worst approach. A much better thought is to try to be seen by the best physicians at the best institutions available in one's region and that often means becoming a patient of docs practicing at medical schools. I can hear my FIL's voice now, "Yes, that would have been in the year nineteen and thirty six that Daddy moved us from the coal camp into town and ...." Unfortunately he didn't live long into this millennium but I guess he would have said "It happened in twenty and oh-four ...." watchmelol, I've heard the first decade of this century referred to as the "aughts", "aughtys", and sometimes the "naughty aughtys". Comments (9)Well, one does have to have a rocket scientist degree to cook an egg! For hard-cooked eggs, I bring the eggs and water to a boil, cover them and take them off the heat. For soft-cooked eggs, I steam them by putting about 1/4 inch of water in the pan and when it comes to a boil, put the egg in, cover and time it to 6 min. 28 sec. Remove it to cold water to stop cooking. As for peeling the hard-cooked ones, I put them in a jar of cold water, shake it a few times, and they are ready to peel, as they have cracked slightly and water separates the white from the shell. 8 years agoHaving worked in the lighting department of a large store, I learned that refitting a lamp with a new shade is a 'crapshoot' at best. Very often what the customer was sure was the right replacement was brought back. and exchanged for another that didn't work either.
I like lamps that have shades that can be kept clean by washing, carefully of course.
In my living room I have these table lamps. Of course this limits the rest of your décor.

I buy a LOT of lighting for the homes. Guess I'm kind of a lamp & lighting nut. Lamps, chandeliers, pendants & scones are works of art! (I did say I was into this....right? lol)
I was nuts about linen boned shades when I purchased a pair of these.
I have this chandy in a 5 light version.
Pierced ceramic base, oblong shade.
