Do I need to remove all dead grass before reseeding (if aerating)?

Brown patch killed majority of my front lawn this past year. My lawn literally looks like thin straw. I am going to aerate for the first time, and I'm wondering if it is necessary to rake up all the dead grass before seeding. I plan on applying a good bit of black kow before I seed.

I ask because I'm lazy, and I don't really want to rake up all that grass. Also thinking a heavy aeration might do the trick, and the existing dead grass may help keep seeds from washing away. Thoughts?
