Bathroom finish question - polished nickel or ORB?
Comments (5)We have ORB levers/hinges throughout our new home on white doors, also primarily white cabinets with ORB. However, in the master bath we used dark cabinets with brushed nickel. I never even thought about the idea of switching the hardware on the doors in the MBa to brushed nickel. I wanted the continuity of having all the doors alike, plus the ORB does match the dark cabinets in the MBa. I think the lack of continuity with the door levers would have bugged me. It's not something that sticks out like a sore thumb to have it the same ORB--in fact, I think it looks good. The MBa door is often open into the MBR, which has ORB on that door. We have a walk-in closet (with door) off the MBa as well as the door into the toilet stall--all ORB levers. Of course you should do what you like, but IMHO, stick with ORB....See MorePolished nickel vs polished chrome
Comments (11)Thanks - that's helpful to know that the nickel is a warmer tone. You can kind of see that the tone is slightly different in the pictures. I wonder if the patina thing happens with all or if that's a brand specific situation. I don't really want to get a patina like the ORB stuff I bought years back. My new faucet is chrome. I will never again buy any faucet that isn't classic chrome as I'm so tired of the trendy finishes that go out of style. I don't particularly like silver hardware on a medium/light cabinet but I also don't want trendy bronze that will also go out of style. So I will probably go with some combo of chrome/polished nickel and brushed nickel so at least it's all the same color. This isn't a high end remodel, just a minor update of a small guest bathroom that isn't used that often. It all started with ancient wallpaper removal and then I decided to replace the cheap, ugly vanity and medicine cabinet and then the hanging brass light fixture had to go. On and the door that swings out into the hall will be changed to swing into the bathroom. What were they thinking.........See MoreWould polished nickel sconces blend with chrome in a bathroom?
Comments (21)Just another note.... If you have shiny chrome fixtures and can't or don't want to match light fixtures to chrome then don't. If you try to match another shiny material it looks like a wanna be. Go with silver but make it a brushed - something similar but in fact different in its own right and it won't look like a wanna be. Just like the finish on the silver mirror in your picture it is brushed not polished and shiny like the fixtures....See MorePolished or brushed nickel??? (cross posted in Bathrooms)
Comments (9)We did our faucets in chrome except for the cabinet latches, which weren't available in chrome so the cabinet guy substituted polished nickel. I think PN is gorgeous and I was tempted to go for it for all our fixtures but I am so glad I didn't...those stupid cabinet knobs tarnish if you so much as look at them the wrong way. I had to ask my husband to please be careful to only open them with clean dry hands (kind of annoying in a bathroom when you are applying makeup, lotion, etc.) I have heard there is a type of polish I can get to clean them up (brasstech is the name, I think) but I haven't ordered it yet. I need to do it though. If I had to do it over again, I would change the knob style before going with polished nickel -- I can see that they are going to be a serious maintenance headache over the years....See MoreSteph
