TV Over Fireplace vs TV On Separate Wall
Comments (35)I put the TV on a separate wall than the wall which will eventually have a wood burning stove. (The mantle and backdrop is already in place. Right now I am dealing with homeowners insurance that doesn't want me to have one.) I don't watch much TV at all, and I really dislike - for me - having an ugly black box being the center of living room attention. When I have guests over, we're here to talk. I can think of exceedingly few occasions I'd be watching the idiot box with guests. Probably if they were here several days, we'd rent a movie or two via Amazon Prime. (Moot point right now, COVID and all.... but hopefully that won't last...) And with a wood burning stove, the exhaust pipe will go up and bisect the view of any TV over the mantle. I sat down on the couch to figure out the best viewing height - which is well below what the mantle might ever be, at least on this couch. It would be fine if I could lean back and rest my head, to have something over mantle height - assuming I'd go with a regular fireplace. But at six feet tall - there just isn't a couch or sofa like that. Plus as others have said, what about decorations? I enjoy decorating my mantle for various holidays! After all, that's really what mantles are for, right? The thing is off to the side, and it does not get glare there, either....See MorePicture Frame Lift to Hide TV Over Fireplace?
Comments (9)So a couple of other ideas you might want to try. Samsung makes their Frame TV that shows your favorite artwork when not in use. https://www.samsung.com/us/explore/frame-tv/highlights/ Only downside is there is a separate 14.3" x 4.5" x 1.2" IO box that needs to be hidden out of view somewhere and still connect to this TV. You could actually hide the IO box in the recess and then install the frame TV over the top assuming the mounting hardware will reach past the edges of the recess. Another option to look at his Seura TV which is the same idea but a mirror when not in use. https://www.seura.com/products/smart/ They have two flavors-- a bathroom mirror type where even at 2-3" from the mirror you cannot see the TV. The TV quality is not as good but a better mirror. The second is the Living Room mirror type where you cannot see the TV when standing 3ft or farther from the TV. Not as good of a mirror but a better quality TV. On this one be careful on the 4k side as they are 4kUHD compliant but not HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, or HDR compliant the last I checked. That's a bunch of tech compliance but bottom line is you want all that in your TV if you want the very best picture available these days....See MorePros and cons of tv over fireplace

Comments (22)We have our TV mounted over the mantel, which is pretty high. We just tilted it downwards fairly steeply, and it works for us. None of us have had any discomfort. We also use the fireplace, and there's plenty of room to make sure the TV doesn't feel the heat. I'm not sure we'd make this choice permanently for aesthetic reasons, but it works for the few years we'll be here....See MorePat Contilli
