Comments (4)Okay, I did not realize you were on the opposite side of the world! That makes a difference, regarding the very light leaf color. Sun exposure can also cause light colored leaves. Put your hoyas in less direct sun, and they will green back up. Yes, change to an orchid mix. If you are using a slow release fertilizer, no need to feed during watering, but be sure to add more slow release when it is due (check package, some are every month, some last 3-6 months). Regarding the small hoyas, yes, move to smaller pots, if you have them. If not, it's not too big a deal, as long as your potting mix is well-draining. Check the roots for signs of rot when repotting. Rot causes the rooting stem (where roots come out) to turn black or brown and squishy. The roots will look stringy, brown or black in color and might smell sour or bad. For your polyneura (2nd to last photo in your first post), I suggest moving that one inside, as it likes cooler conditions. It also prefers to stay evenly damp (not soaked or soggy). Regarding your large hoya, that one spot is sunburn. The pitting leaves can be due to sucking bugs (check for aphids, scale or mealybugs), or they could just be natural mutant leaves (it happens). If it is bugs, treat with a sharp dpray of water or, of you don't mind chemical warfare you can treat with systemic insecticide, like this: https://www.amazon.com/Compare-N-Save-Systemic-Shrub-Insect-Drench/dp/B00ARKS5QO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1475654521&sr=8-2&keywords=compare+and+save+insect+control Alternatively, if you'd rather use a gentle and bee-friendly formula: 2 tablespoons of baby shampoo 1/4 cup rubbing (isopropyl alcohol) alcohol Put in spray/spritz bottle. Fill rest of bottle with water. Spray entire surface of plant. KEEP OUT OF BRIGHT LIGHT/SUNLIGHT until plant is completely dry. Repeat as necessary, until no more pests are seen. As far as trellising that plant, you may want to, as they can get pretty heavy, which can cause breakage. Easy solution: Small twist ties or orchid clips can be used to train those vines without the use of a trellis! Just wrap the vines around and up the hanging pot and secure onto the hanger part with ties or clips, like this: Hoya calycina clipped to hanging pot: Keep new growth/vine tips pointed toward the sky, to prevent vine dieback....See MoreRequesting your assistance for Greige warm paint color w/o green/blue
Comments (13)Sometimes decorating around what is often a "design mistake" is a 2nd mistake. If one does not like the first mistake, the 2nd won't somehow neutralize it. I once had a client who carpeted the entire, LARGE first floor of her house with rust, somewhat "shady" wool carpet. A VERY expensive mistake and one she should not have tried to decorate around. She finally gave in and had it taken up, to her husband's great chagrin. A mistake is a mistake. I'd save my money and replace those floors before doing anything else....See MoreKitchen reno on 1910 tudor: layout assistance requested!
Comments (8)What an interesting project! It looks as if it was a kitchen laid out for the help, or caters, in a well-to-do household. I'm not a designer, but I love old house renovations, and I hope you keep us updated along the way. I like a prep sink on the island and clean-up on the perimeter--but in this case your island view is of pantry and pantry doors. We spend more time prepping items for a meal, than in clean-up, so I moved the main sink to the island, as you suggested. I drew the prep sink in front of the thin strip of wall--since most of prep work happens on one side or the other of a sink, you have the choice to prep in front of the windows, or on the peninsula, facing the sunroom. Given a choice, I wouldn't put the fridge so far from the range, but in an old house remodel, sometimes we don't have as many options. I did include a MW drawer on the corner of the peninsula near the fridge, for convenience. The island width is reduced by 12"--6" for each short aisle. I'd like to see a wider work aisle, but it looks as is the traffic aisle is already at the NKBA recommended minimum of 44". 42" is a one-person work aisle, and 48" is considered wide enough for two people. But, with the DW to the right of the sink, the works zones can be separated--except for the zone-crossing between appliances. If you don't want a corner susan, the corner can be voided in favor of wider drawers, but you'll need filler in the corner to make sure the drawers clear the oven handle and hardware on perpendicular cabinets. As for the deep pantry closet, maybe just 18" deep shelves for items too big for kitchen drawers. If it hasn't already been decided, I'd suggest drawers for all base cabinets. The bases on each side of the range are narrow, so pull-outs might work better there. Good luck! ETA, the only way I could think of to improve the prep/cooking triangle would be to close the kitchen to the sunroom and put the fridge on that wall, but you would give up all that lovely natural light:...See MoreJon
