I think I'm going to cry
Comments (21)Don't feel bad! I get tons of that s#$t from my neighbors yards! They don't try at all to control crap grass or clover (they have lovley white carpeted lawns most of the summer then the cg takes over) Its a royal battle trying to keep it out of my yard. The cg seed heads ripen, then when they break off, blower all over, spreading their wonderful presents. I've built a raised bed (3') along one lot line to keep their mess from filtering into my yard, and that's helping....See MoreAnyone Overlooked the Benefits of Clover?
Comments (48)Just found this thread, and would appreciate advice. I go for a semi-natural lawn: turf grass, but with some wildflowers encouraged. I'm a convert to white clover. It has taken years to get the stuff established in my lawn, which is in thin topsoil over a deep layer of glacial sand - very dry! It's finally spreading in some areas, and I'm hoping will fill in the barest places where grass just won't grow. (I mulch-mow, but don't water as a rule.) I've been mowing a couple of times in the spring, then waiting to cut again until about July. This lets my favorite wildflowers go to seed; then I have a mostly-grass lawn again through autumn. Clover seed is expensive. It also seems that letting it naturalize should encourage the hardiest strains for this plot. So here's the questions: how long after flowering do I have to wait for seeds I've never actually seen seed on the plants; I guess it falls/blows out as soon as it's ripe. I've read that the flowers die as soon as they've been fertilized. Is there some fixed number of days from when the flowers start to wilt until I can mow without losing all the seed? Thanks- Chelydra...See MoreHow to stop Crabgrass Invasion?
Comments (9)In case you don't already know this - crabgrass is an annual, and at this point you may as well leave it where it is. You could also hand pull it, which I occasionally do just to get rid of the seeds and to give surrounding perennial grass a break. THe crab grass will set seed and die very soon, you can deal with the seedlings in the spring with corn gluten. CG does not prevent the seeds from sprouting, it prevents the newly-sprouted roots from developing, so the seedlings die. CG has no effect on established plants, and can be used in garden beds as well as on the lawn. Also, most people will tell you that a well-grown lawn, if properly fertilized and watered, and if mowed high, will shade out crab grass seedlings. I haven't gotten that far in my lawn-care ethic, so, although I believe it, I haven't seen it - and probably never will....See MorePartial Eastern MA Lawn Renovation
Comments (11)...thanks - I already hit it again in mid-May with 16lbs. “Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Food - Starter Food for New Grass Plus Weed Preventer” (NPK 21-22-4, 0.5% Fe, 0.08% Mesotrione (Tenacity)). Works out to ~0.7lbs./1000sqft Nitrogen. I also leveled the old garden area with sand - it is still settling, but appears to be helping. I must say that the monthly 2x Tenacity and 1x Tupersan treatments have worked very well - almost zero broadleaf weeds or crabgrass germination to this point. Now comes the true challenge to keep it properly irrigated during the summer heat with no sprinkler system. I will plan to do 1lbN/ksqft in Sep+Nov as advised and keep updating this thread....See MoreTonawanda
