Did you remove all the old soil from the rootball? I'm guessing not & this is a resultant drainage problem.

spiders roots like to have a little rest by having the soil go a little dry and then a thorough watering. With spiders, for me I need to concentrate more on giving it some down and dry time more than I do watering.

Don't fertilize it any more until you see new growth developing, fertilizing when a plant that is struggling just causes more stress. I agree with Laurie, let it get dry a bit before watering again, about 3 or 4 inches deep and don't worry about misting, and keep it out of intense, direct sun. Once you've gotten all those conditions right just walk away.... slow and steady wins the race....

Karen, the rootball was so huge there wasn't any soil around it, it was just a giant mass of white roots, she had filled the entire pot I bought her in.

Rootball also looked healthy, no discolored areas.

Karen do you have any ideas for me that may help with drainage? It is in a big plastic pot, with 2 inches of soil on either side of the plant and 5 inches of soil deep in the bottom of the pot. It has a drainage tray and it is not allowed to sit in standing water.

The giant carrot-like roots can get so big and full that they smush against each other, decreasing ability to access moisture & oxygen.

Tiffany, should I trim the roots? I'm not sure how to help the plant. I just hate seeing the leaves dying, I'm worried the whole plant will die.

I have had to pot up my spider 3 times in 6 months because those huge roots make the plant once they are so grown out of control, the top starts to lose its healthy look. I would like to know if i can do something about the outer roots that are so big.

You can trim the roots &/or use a deeper pot.

Ok Thank you so much! Her roots are much more congested than in the photos you posted. I will see if I can get her a deeper pot then, She's a big plant over 2 feet across not including the strands with the babies on them, with those she's three feet across! If I were to trim the roots, do you have any tip on how to do it so I don't hurt the plant and invite infection?

Ok thank you, I will repot her again and untagle the roots when I get her a new much larger pot ASAP.

How do you prune roots on a Spider plant, and is there anything I should do to prevent infection where they are cut?

So I re potted her and massaged her roots to loosen them, and you won't believe it, but she had a plastic saucer entangled in her roots that I completely missed the first time I re potted her. It was completely hidden in the root ball and I didn't even know it was there until I went to loosen the roots and heard it crackle/felt it! She was basically drowning and starving! So I think she's going to be ok now. She's got a bigger pot and everything. Thank you so much everyone for your help!

How is she doing now?

After all of everyone's help she was still going downhill. Then I looked at her leaves with a flashlight one day and found mites! The spider plant had spider mites! A bad infestation. I did neem oil treatments for 4 weeks and they appear to be gone. The poor thing lost most of her leaves, but she has grown some new ones and is looking better every day. After the treatments I was pruning the half dead leaves and found what looked like giant clumps of cornmeal at the base of one of her tufts. It must have been the only area not saturated with neem oil. I removed them an did three more treatments. Hoping for the best now, she's hanging in there. Finally got her watering right. Poor thing had a lot of issues! Trying to get her to focus all of her energy into new growth <3 Her name is Ursula, lol

I would take one of the stolon plantlets, and put it in soil- just cover the base of the plantlet, and the roots will grow. Leave it attached to the mother for a couple of weeks, then- cut the 'cord'. Just in case the mother plant doesn't make it.

Thanks for the tip! I will do that. I have a couple of the babies in there, but not sure how they will do. I will try leaving them attached to the mother plant. Hoping for the best!

One year on and how is Ursula and pups doing? I'm having a tough time with mine yellowing and finding the ideal spot for it. Right now it's in a north-facing (southern hemisphere!) bathroom window that gets indirect, but bright light throughout the day. I worry that this position may be too bright for my plant. Perhaps someone here can give me some pointers please? I must add that the lighting in my house is more low-light than bright due to the wide wrap-around verandahs, so finding the perfect environment is proving to be difficult. I just don't want to lose her.

i have mine in the morning sun light window hanging one foot away from the window and they all do fine .

i also have one that is 20 years old doing great in the morning sun window.

I need help. My momma spiderplant loves direct summer sunlight. I know its weird but she got three times bigger this summer and so so green. She's about 9 years old. I have growing babies also from her. But I brought her in like I always do for winter and put them all under my grow bulb for six hours daily then rest. I put her in a nice large pot with lots of room. Her roots were so congested. But I didnt break up the root base. I never have before either. But now she is sick! First her leaves turned brown and cracked in half. Now they are turning yellow so fast half of her is gone. And bad burns on tips. I only give her purified water now. In summer it was tap and no issues! I fed her a fertilizer stick in her new pot. Now my medium sized babies are yellowing and burning on tips. I changed their soil to an all purpose soil is the only difference other than bringing them in. I didnt change the pot on the medium babies. I've never seen her sick like this. Please tell me what to do! Help!!
