Where did my caterpillars go?

Friday afternoon I was thrilled to have counted 24 cats on my A. incarnata. Saturday morning they were down by half. I spent most of that day working in my wildflower garden, and periodically I would take a look at the incarnatas, each time finding a diminishing number of cats. Of course, I looked down and under since most of the upper leaves were well eaten, but I saw no fat cats and no pupae. And no wasps. They seem to have found better hunting grounds.

I've just been reading a comment from 2015 on Houzz which says the cats wander off to pupate. I thought they pupate on the plant somewhere. Any ideas where I should look to see possible pupae?

P.S. I found a cat on my potted sage plant on a raised shelf a few feet from the incarnatas. Silly me, I carried it over to the incarnatas and found it a nice leaf. Could it have been readying to pupate on the sage?
