Broken rod on intake valve

Samantha Burns

So I have a pony Troy-Bilt 17.5 hp riding mower. Started having problems with it two years ago which I thought was battery and well this past summer I bought a new battery. Started just fine. Sometimes the mower backfires when turning it off. Has done that for couple of years. Well I was trying to mow about a month ago and was mowing for about 30 seconds and it died. So I pushed it back to garage made sure it had gas. Tried again. No start but turns over. So I have now replaced the spark plug, fuel filter, fuel, oil, cleaned carburetor, replaced the breather hose since it was cracked , new air filter. Then I saw a video on the valve adjustment. I open the case and I find the top of the rod fall out , i got the rest of the rod out as well. I am hoping this will make my mower run again. Any thoughts of what else to look for while I have tools out and engine easy to get too?
