Comments (7)I'm sorry, but I'm really not loving the clean-up sink wall. If you're of typical adult height, it seems very out of proportion. Of course, if you're much shorter than average, practical considerations might outweigh design there, but to me, it looks like the whole bank of uppers should just be raised up to the ceiling (or 8' if your ceiling's sloped), leaving either an open space, a 'window' or a full backsplash wall. Other than that, I think liberal use of an accent color could do wonders for your space. My personal favorite is a rich vibrant red, but for your space, a deep golden yellow might bring out the blue in the granite and the warm tones in your beautiful cherry. I wouldn't bother changing the knobs because I think that will actually work against 'feminizing' the space. You'd be replacing a light brushed nickel tone with a darker ORB -- you wouldn't even see the flower pattern until you get way up close. The materials Hubby chose tend to the 'dramatic' -- hard, shiny, high-contrast. So to feminize, typical things like soft, hazy, lacey or frilly just wouldn't play nicely. Think of a 'masculine-looking actress' -- say, Angie Harmon or Angelica Huston? -- dressed in pastels with lace and ruffles. Yuck! But something bold, clean-lined, flashy even -- Possibly large cut crystal pieces, art glass, brightly-colored ceramics in sleek shapes?...See MoreLocal Cabinet Business bankrupt, Lost 45K
Comments (20)For those of you still seeking bids on future work, please shop around. I honestly don't believe any contractor should ask for money upfront unless he wants to pay for a big ticket item like the cabinets, and then you can add them as the payee, too. If he wants money upfront to pay his employees, a red light should go off in your head. My husband NEVER asks a homeowner for money upfront. Even for materials. As someone mentioned earlier, contractors have charge accounts for materials, and payment isn't due for a month. If your contractor's business is solid, he'll have enough money in his payroll account to make sure his employees can get paid until your job is done. I know there are some situations where you're not going to be able to get around paying upfront (we had to have our driveway paved recently-they insisted on money upfront-I guess it would have been hard to take the asphalt back if my check was no good, huh?) :) I'm just saying, be careful with your money, and get as educated as you can. Raehelen, don't wait on your carpenter. Start nagging him. Make him put you first. He's floating on your money....See MoreLouisiana Flood took my cabinets- help please
Comments (24)Mary, I'm in a very similar situation as you. I live in Denham Springs and our home was flooded as well. I'm trying to find a custom cabinet maker that isn't three months out. Would you mind sending me the information on whom you used out of Mississippi? It's getting to the point where cabinets will be holding us up as we just are about done with taping and floating our Sheetrock. Any help you could provide would be great. And thanks for this original post as it has been very helpful!...See MoreAny advice on layout/cabinet design? Lost our designer
Comments (69)Thanks, Benje. I really appreciate the time and thought you've put into this--very generous of you. I like your ideas. I guess the biggest difference with this is that we lose the fourth bedroom/office. When we bought the house, we planned on one kid, but--twins! My office is currently the small bedroom, and they share a room, but we'd really like to give them their own space. So our plan helped us get there (without losing my office). You've raised some interesting points, and I will show this to my husband so we can think it all through. Many thanks again...See MoreUser
