Are you ripping out every single tile and stone?

its remarkable.... you can tell its a new renovation by the style of the shower, but i agree their tile choice was unfortunate. it's not dated (dated means dirty looking tile was the bees knees just 10 years ago), just a poor choice.

its going to cost you a bundle to redo this, i'm sorry for your pain! i hope you have ~$60K + to spend on this. (you realize if you change the tile in the shower, the whole shower needs to be ripped out...)

i'm really gobsmacked at how bad this tile is, and how it was laid to have little curvy paths...

less money fix... only change the floor tile. leave the shower wall alone, leave the wall at the end of the tub alone.

Ack! More sconces IN the shower. And that vanity is beyond weird. There is not a lot salvageable here. The actual tub, maybe. The shower shows signs of a birdbath around the drain.

You really need to work with a local bath designer. You have a complete gut on your hands. It will be far from a cheap redo. Or, just live with it for a year or two until you can afford that 60K+ redo. But, those sconces in the shower are DANGEROUS. At least decommission the wiring to them until you do the rip out of everything. Don't let it be too far down the road. That shower is going to have moisture damage issues when you do gut it.

The plan is to remove all the tile. We understand costs involved, just plan to live here the rest of our lives and willing to pay to be happy. We can live with the vanity.

What we are looking for the most is tile suggestions such as patterns and colors. Thoughts?

Hire a local designer who understands proper waterproofing and has good contacts with contractors who do too. That weird vanity is going to have to be ripped out to do the floors, and it has not earned it's place to go back. It needs to get tossed off the island permanently.

Are you keeping the stone? We just had tile put in our bath that is white with marbling, but the veins are warmer in tone, more brown than gray. It may look better with the stone than a cool gray. We only put it on the floor, the shower is real marble (our master is teeny tiny)! Are you painting the vanity and trim or keeping it brown? If it's all staying brown, you will want warmer tones in your tile.

What's a "birdbath around the drain? I tried looking it up. That was...interesting.

Why would you change this bathroom. Its looks fantastic! What are you gonna change it to? Boring cheap looking white and grey?

This bathroom looks expensive. Especially That custom made granite around the tub. Most of these garbage modern designs just slap tiles around it. (the cheap way)

I don't know...I kinda like it. Not the usual white or gray.

well, clearly, the person who built it originally must have kinda liked it, too. i'm not one to 'rip out things' but wow i hate this tile.

in the end, the cost of removing and replacing That Which Offends in comparison with the the value of That Which Remains becomes untrivial. by the time you run around trying to match this to that (poorly), and make this a bit higher, this a bit lower, remove electrical from this wall... & etc. you have the cost of a whole new started from scratch exactly as you'd like it bathroom. Especially if you keep the plumbing fixtures all in the same place as they are now. having to replace that shower is the killer. not to mention the odds of cracking a few desired tiles while removing the adjacent bad ones.

maybe put a runner the length of the floor to cover the weavy paths on the floor til you've saved up the $ and made a good plan

hey Tony, maybe the new owners doesn't like. I don't like it, and many others don't like it. Your taste obviously differs. No one cares if you don't like white and gray bathrooms. What matters is the OP is asking for advice on how to change it, not if they should keep it. I'm sure this was in style at one time. yes it's a nice job. yes it's time to change it. Don't fret over it.

hey beth, so change something that still looks great and was obviously costly, into cheap garbage? Cause I guarantee you if they do the most modern garbage that I've seen on this site, it will be a hell of a lot cheaper than this bathroom is now.

tony, that may be true, but if the OP doesn't like it, what should they do? It looks great to you, to most everyone else, it's horrible. You can't make someone like something, even if it was well done. There are plenty of modern done bathrooms on here that aren't cheap and don't look like garbage. I don't know what you're referring to.

OP didn't mention anything about that, only that she wanted lighter colors and possibly a marble type of flooring. Why you think that is going to look cheap or like garbage is out in left field. This bathroom looks like cheap garbage to you?

I hear ya. But marble look and actual marble are two different worlds. The picture you just posted looks like real marble lol, and thats expensive. Not many of these modern updates do that and if they do, no where near that much.

Taking a second look, I would probably change the main tile also, and thats it. I'd leave everything else like the wrap around tiles, granite tops, and cabinets. The trim does look like cheap prefinished MDF garbage though. I would change it to real oak or what ever wood, but real.

Wow, amazing variety of perspectives. Let me clarify a couple things. First of all, while it's not totally our style, we do respect the custom creation. We are keeping the quartzite. It's very unique and we are trying to work with it. Same with the cabinets and sinks. Not our style, but given the curve and angles in the wall, they are an appropriate build. We are really mainly trying to change out the tile. It really does not look custom to the rest of the bathroom. It looks like an era style that has had it's day. Looks dirty all the time. They used a different creamier tile in another bathroom that we could have lived with. We understand that there is a lot of different opinions on this. We aren't trying to be "cheap" but want to make it more timeless. Something that will compliment the stone and cabinets better than we feel it does. You may disagree and that is fine. We are just asking for thoughts as this IS our home and we want to make it more our home.

BTW, the trim is hand milled knotless pine and is throughout the house. We are keeping that. We have another are of remodeling that will five us some spare if they screwup removing it.

I'm relieved to hear. I think your on the right track. Yeah I wasn't sure about the trim. It was based on what I could tell from the picture. Pine isn't really that expensive but I like it a hell of a lot more then white. Just looking at the bathroom, it has warmth and character you can never get out of white trim. Not even close. Look at the picture beth posted. Yes, its bright and clean looking. But its also cold and heartless. Its just there. Thats why theres all that useless junk all over the place to make it feel more comforting. Candles, ornaments, family pictures? Really? You wanna be looking at your family and them at you while your naked in the tub? LOL gross.

Montana sounds like theyve had a few cheap priceshopper renos done and got what they got cheap results from shopping.. or has a deal worked out for promoting earthtones.
