Need advice on updating exterior of our new house.

We are getting ready to close on a home that was built in the 70's. The interior has been somewhat updated and I've got some ideas for the remaining interior. But, The outside has got me baffled We have never had to update the exterior of a home before. I'm sure there is a way to make it look better. I'm just not sure how....new roofing, paint color, adding brick??? Any ideas?

What style did you want to try to achieve..?

I think you should post some more pictures. That picture is probably the most unflattering view of your nice house. It makes the garage door look exaggerated, which it probably isn't in person. Everything depends on your budget, of course, but without spending too much money (like changing the roof and exterior materials), which I am certainly not qualified to give opinions about, I would think about creating a wider, more substantial and nicer walkway to the front door. A couple of pretty planters on either side of the garage, and larger light fixtures would go a long way. Im sure you could do something else with that post. Let's wait for experts!

Thank you so much for your great ideas. If we remove the entire balcony that would be a huge renovation. There's an over sized slider door that leads to one of the living rooms to the balcony. I wish we could remove it, maybe in a few years. We are thinking of adding new updated railing to it and hopefully that give it a better look. I'd love to white wash the brick! Thank you!

I actually like the warmer wood tones. adds a bit of warmth and depth. you could always stain them a darker color if you want. Taupe? why taupe? This?? this is taupe siding. Sorry, I think that's a horrible choice! taupe will meld into that roof color and just look blah. especially if you remove the stone. What would you like to see? How about some contrast? I'd cover the stone w/romabio, and do a composite wood siding over on the far left. then I'd paint the siding a crisp white, do black trim. the cedar posts, it will look great. (but you could also do other shades too. ) what about a dark blue gray siding? as for the stone, since you want to remove them, why not get a small container of the Romabio and wash them to see what you think? (and if you really hate it, it washes off w/in 72 hours. Comes in a bunch of colors. If you get the Masonry Romabio, you can have it tinted any color you like) lime wash is the Classico:

can you post a picture of the roof color you're getter? pewter can have blue/gray tones, or brown tones Right now, in your picture, I see regular red brick paired w/a very cool tone siding color. almost looks like a lavender gray. which direction is the front of your house facing? North? East? let me show you a few before and afters , some of which have the replaced windows. see what you're drawn too this frist one did exactly what you want to do to your arch windows. Doesn't look bad. a slightly diff style home though. I like the addition in the gables, the painted brick, updated front door another one w/the rectangles. don't care for it here. I'd do a larger window (black one) and close up the rest of it this one is similar. they removed the arch and didn't replace it. covered it w/the shake. limewashed the brick, took down the arched entryway. added the shutters. looks a bit more french country a bit more modern w/the black windows, wood garage door. new windows (Rombio Classico on the brick) They kept the arch, but removed the grids. along w/the painted brick, wood accents, black windows, it really looks updated

You all have such wonderful ideas, I'm very excited! @cat_ky I am not sure whether it's stain or paint - I think paint (we're not in the house yet so I can't just pop out and take a look). @hallettco I think the white windows are vinyl. In terms of vision, I love a light and airy vibe - very indoor/outdoor feel. The interior will probably be some sort of modern farmhouse/coastal look. I would love for the exterior to work with that vision but I am really struggling to see how that would be possible. I think the stone and brown shingle roof are limiting. I was wondering whether we could paint the stone but I am not sure whether that would look weird. @Debbie Downer This is all great advice, thank you! I am not certain but I think the gold is a paint. A stain might look better but I don't know if it's possible to go from paint to stain. I am also not sure what type of wood the exterior is.

I meant "the post" referring to the skinny roof support post on your front walkway.

These houses were called California (Florida) (Southwest) ramblers and were built in 1960's and 1070's. They are also being referred to as Mid Century modern now. They were also very popular here in North Alabama. If you google those terms you will find a lot of examples. We have the same pitch roof without the gable. Our neighbors have the gable in various forms.

By the way, from what I have read, the tile roofs are considered a plus in Florida.
