Do you make your own birthday cake?
Comments (27)Cookie8, I almost always end up rewriting recipes, so I can make them in the order I need to. (Starting with preheat the oven to...) The way some recipes are written, reading ahead is necessary, although not always an option. I find it makes the instructions much longer, which makes the recipe look more intimidating. The truth is, if I can follow it easily to the letter, I find my results are more successful. Sometimes, I'll rewrite a recipe several times before it's where I need it to be. You didn't really ask, but I always get out every ingredient, bowl, spatula measuring cup/spoons and mixer that I'm going to need before I even start. I measure it all, and set everything on a tray, so all I have to do is mix everything together. (If a recipe has multiple parts, I set up different trays.) That way, when you read through the recipe, it's all set up and easy to ''check off'' while you're baking. I hope you try again. Determination is a fine quality to possess! I have an easy one bowl chocolate cake recipe, if you need something to go to, that's tasty, easy and worthy of a birthday cake. I usually make it with a Cinnamon Buttercream Icing, and get requests for it often. Just let me know if you'd like the recipe. Deanna, I always use the recipe on the back of a bar of Bakers Sweet German Chocolate. It's no secret, but rather more time consuming to make as a cake, than anything else. It's our favorite as the buttermilk always makes it so moist, and it's a cake that only gets better with time. We always make it the day before, so the flavors have time to meld. It's also fun to anticipate eating it, when it looks so good sitting under a glass cake cover....See MorePeach Cobbler Dump Cake ?
Comments (14)Kaye, I was too lazy to re type so I copy and pasted from the other post! lol when I make my dump cakes I leave out the butter. Use a cake mix that has NO PUDDING in the mix. Duncan Hines is what I use. I've never made it with peaches, but I make it all the time with pineapple OR mixed fruit. I find that it always works out best by Mix the can of fruit into the cake mix. Pour in to a 9X13 pan and bake ... what ever the box says.. I bake 325 for about an hour. I would think that the smaller the peach bits, the better it would mixl up. I add a can of pineapple to the mix or a can of mixed fruit. I've tried low sugar cherry pie, but it works best when you mix the cake mix with a white soda, pour 3/4 of that into the cake pan, spoon the cherry pie mix over the top and then spoon the remaining cake mix over that and bake. You could use apple pie filling too... with spice cake, or cinnamon cake Pour some of the Costco 3 berry mix into a 9 X 13 cake pan. Add a 12 oz can of white pop to cake mix, stir and then pour over top of berries. Bake for an hour or so and makes a great cobbler >> . . . . I bet you could put the peaches on the bottom, then add clear soda to cake mix... (fresca works well) stir and pour over peaches, cook for about an hour or a little less. that sounds good!...See MoreRainbows and Mermaids and Birthday Cakes
Comments (26)Yes, 4. It's hard for me to believe too. (sigh) The older I get, the faster the time goes, it seems, funny how Chase and I have that in common. (grin) Sharon, I thought about selling cakes, then decided that I really just want to play with flour and fondant. I want to see a picture or think of something and make that, and I don't want to deal with some spoiled bride complaining that a ruffle is 1/16th of an inch lower on one side so she doesn't have to pay me. I've had a couple of people ask right after I made the birch bark wedding cake, but decided I just don't want to deal with the inevitable hassle, or the problems with transporting and setting up some of those elaborate concoctions. Coconut, I'm glad to see you here! Yes, Makayla is a big help, and she's far more artistic than I am, so she's good at things like painting gold lustre dust on those mermaid tails and making fondant seaweed. When the kids get those ideas, though, I don't hesitate to say "I can't do that". They promptly come up with something else. And if I try it and it doesn't work, I do something else and they're always fine with it. It's cake, after all... Ellen, cake and buttercream frosting and fondant and M&Ms and ice cream. Yeah. It's their parents' problem. (snicker) Cindy Mac, Maci is adorable in appearance, she's fierce in behavior, trust me. She's the youngest and the loudest of all the grandkids. Dcarch, they did indeed, eat cake. No leftovers for me to deal with, double bonus. Colleen, a lot of my cakes are your chocolate cake recipe, the texture is "right" for holding up decorations! Kathy, your Beau/Lily must be getting nearly as big as Makayla. It's hard to believe. Annie...See MoreMadison's "Rock Star" birthday, with Hot Milk Cake
Comments (20)Wintercat, there was a little bit of protein in addition to the goldfish, at least they made the sandwiches from my own grassfed beef. (grin) Oh boy, time does fly, doesn't it? It doesn't even seem possible to me that she's in kindergarten. And taking over, of course. I don't remember having birthday parties when I was a child, or graduation open houses or a lot of other parties that are customary now. Birthdays usually included a cake after supper with the family and a couple of gifts. "Important" birthdays, like turning 13 and being a teenager or starting school might include a sleepover with a couple of friends, but that was the complete celebration. This is more fun, LOL. sleevendog, my Grandmother used to make rabbits out of pear halves, I still remember those! Lars, Ashley's favorite color combination is turquoise with chocolate brown, she decorated her bedroom with those colors. Much better than my Mother's kitchen when I was young, the "hot" color scheme then was turquoise and pink! Annie...See Morelindaohnowga
