Hiding washer dryer hookups
I see pictures like these and I want my washer/dryer to look this neat--without seeing the hoses/plugs/water cutoffs. I know those things exist and I know they need to be accessible, but can someone point me to something I can specify for our new house build to make it this attractive?
The washer/dryer space is about 6' wide (still could be adjusted but I think that'll be sufficient). We intend to have a front load w/d (not yet selected) on DIY pedestals (with room for laundry baskets under them). Our preference is a gas dryer. The w/d backs up to the guest room closet.
How do we make the setup look this sleek and still meet code/safety/practical considerations?

6 years agoIt doesn't look like they could service the water or the dryer vent without taking the set out, or having an access area on the other side of the wall. In your case, would you want to have access in the closet. I don't know about that. Here is my solution:
Below, bottom shelf of the open cabinet has a false back that breaks down to access the vent for clean out, and the water valves for shut off. I shut it off during time away from home, but not daily:

Comments (6)Yeah the depth is an issue. Its almost 3' deep in the w/d area. It drops back a little by the wh and ws. Then to the left of those I have 7 feet of wall space. I had thought to make that a closet and cover the whole span (20 feet or so) with sliding doors...just afraid it will not look right. Is hard to divide the area since everything is sort of on top each other. Is a bypass door a slider? Is that a tripple track? I thought of having a long track and essentialy two 6' sliders (made up of 2 36" doors each. It would be nice though to have access to the w/d and sink all at once. I thought it might just get to be too many doors. Perhaps a combo of sliders by the ws/wh and verticals over the sink/w/d. Comments (1)If the electrical outlet has the typical three holes of any other outlet in your house it's a 120 volt outlet. An electrical dryer outlet is has a different receptacle setup. Comments (10)I wondered about pantyhose or even the plastic mesh bags onions (or garlic, these bags are finer) but assumed the commercial bags are safer because they'd allow more water flow? If a stocking got a bit full, it'd cause a backup all by itself, I assume. Either way, these traps/filters are a good idea, we have a dog who sheds and the washer does not have its own filter, and we certainly see a lot of lint caught when I've used the wire mesh bags. I am glad I changed over to a 2" drain for the washer, the existing one was 1.5" which I guess was the fashion at the time, reading on this helpful forum I saw newer washers tend to have a higher drain flow, so I figured while I was replumbing the adjoining bathroom was the time to do it. I'd like to see some sort of push-in insert as a lint basket for the washer outlet, so there'd be no risk of one of those strainer things coming off, which might make matters worse (you would think that the lint would just wash straight down the drain, no issue but the existence of the filters and people's frequent recommendation to use them, suggest they're a good idea... Because I worry about the things slipping off, I use an extra long cable/zip tie to affix them so it sticks up above the drainpipe so I can at least still see it's attached. Only problem with the wire strainers, they seem to rust and hole quickly, I guess with detergent residue they're more susceptible. Comments (31)We are on the cusp of placing orders for our appliances. So I wandered back by this thread and noticed the new responses. Mikelock, I love your "after" photo. We're about the finalize our layout, and I keep considering going under-counter instead of stacked. It's a lot of fun to see another real life installation. That extra run of counter must be so nice. Chris Park, thanks for your perspective on how the condensing dryer is performing for you. I was scared off initially by the many negative comments about condensing dryers, but I later became more hopeful when I noticed that many comments note that clothes come out with only an initial dampness - if that makes sense. We're finally going to place our order this week, after much heel dragging from me. The plan for a long time has been Blomberg units (the heat pump dryer sounds like a good idea), although in the 11th hour there is some temptation to order Asko units (condensing dryer) that would match the SS appliances.
