Comments (8)I just found the original mention. I hope I can post this here. http://boards.hgtv.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/2994011632/m/1241061042 I joined the other forum to go look, but I haven't gone through all that stuff. It looks like one person sold it for $5. I can design a cover. I need a gift for ds's soccer coach. I'm curious about how the directions for making the cake get included since you cut the actual cardboard packaging off. I wish I had known about this craft earlier. The cakes were on sale for $1 at Albertson's last month....See MoreFYI Less ounces in Betty Crocker cake mix
Comments (8)Annie, a couple years ago I was commenting on how much smaller eggs seemed than a few years ago. But in looking it up, the standard is: 30 oz per dozen eggs = jumbo 27 oz per dozen eggs = extra large 24 oz per dozen eggs = large 21 oz per dozen eggs = medium 18 oz per dozen eggs = small I was still skeptical so I took out a carton of eggs. Didn't have a dozen so I weighed 6 and they were just over 12 oz. I was surprised. But they still look smaller on the plate. And just the other day I started wondering about if they'd go to 11 (or 10) eggs per carton!...See More1960s Betty Crocker cookbook.
Comments (22)Nancy, I know what you mean. I have the 1950 first edition, but since both the covers are falling off and a lot of the pages are separating from the rings, I doubt it'd sell for much! It's amazing the disparity in prices. Now with the internet and easy access to previously difficult-to-find items, a lot of people are buying old family cookbooks for their children or just replacing/acquiring fresh copies. For some reason there are sellers who really believe they're going to get xxxx dollars for a book anyone with reasonable search skills can find somewhere else dirt cheap. I'm sure someone is paying those prices - it's kind of a used-book bubble. But if you're willing to wait and put your name on notification lists, eventually something at the right price will turn up. I waited two years for an affordable copy of Janice Gill's Great Canadian Bread Book. It can be devilishly hard to find and Gill has said it will never be re-issued, despite the demand. At the time there was one copy on Amazon for about $60.00 and another for $125.00. Eventually I got an "as-new" copy on ebay for $1.50. That was a VERY happy day. Comments (16)Seems like a lot of the older cookie recipes called for shortening or oleo....which is about the same. I am sort of a purist and I won't usually make a cookie that doesn't call for butter. I used to bake cookies all the time. After I had Erin and she was in school, I started baking cookies and kept a file of my favorite ones. I used to buy that Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Cookie magazine every year and some of my favorite recipes were in that one. There was a recipe for Black Walnut Drops, which was a meringue. I loved that cookie! It was similar to divinity, which can be nigh impossible to make with our constant high humidity. I used make Christmas cookie plates and it was a perfect addition to them. My file got dropped and the cards all mixed up and when I finally rearranged it, I couldn't find that recipe. I don't know if I took it out to copy it or what. I looked on line forever, trying to find it. I couldn't remember for sure which one of the magazines it came out in. And I couldn't find the oldest ones. I was afraid I was going to have to try and find it on ebay or Amazon. I hated to buy a magazine just for that one recipe and had no idea which issue it was in, but I decided I would start buying them. I did one more search online though, and I found it. I was so happy. It is such a simple cookie, but like I said, if you do a bunch for Christmas, it just goes so nicely with other types....See Moremamapinky0
