Terri, I threw mind away 6 years ago when I redid my kitchen. I've been really sorry ever since. I'm always calling a friend to borrow hers. What was I thinking? Just because it was falling apart, no excuse. LOL

Terri ~ your grandmother's handwritten recipe was probably her version, after some "tweaking". That's how mine are. Start out with a recipe, tweak to our taste and save it to my recipe file, with my changes.

I have a copy of my Mom's Boston Cooking-School Cook Book by Fannie Farmer--1931
Here are a couple you might try--
Sugar Cookies II (Sour Milk)
1/2 C Butter
1 C sugar
1 egg well beaten
1/4 teaspoon soda
1/2 C sour milk
1 teaspoon salt
Flour ( no amount listed)
cream butter, add sugar gradually, egg, soda mixed with milk,salt and flour to make soft dough.
Chill, roll and bake at 375--no time given

Sour Cream Cookies
2 eggs beaten until light
1 C sugar
1 C thick cream with 1/4 teaspoon soda -to make sour cream
3 C flour
3 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon flour
To Eggs add sugar gradually, dream, and flour, mixed and sifted with baking powder and salt. Chill, roll, and bake.. again 375 no time given

I don't know if you could turn these into dropped cookies or not. ---just a thought

It could make a difference it you use butter or margine. Most of the older receipes seem to work better with real butter.

TB~yep I'm gonna buy that one..The cookbook my mom had was an early 70's BC that was a learning tool for me growing up...I have a few pages from that one..I made color photo copies of them a few years back and have those in plastic page protectors in one of my recipe binders.
I also have a late 80's BC that I still use and have favorites from it.

So I have the cookie batter in the fridge.
I used butter. 1c brown sugar, 1/2c vanilla sugar.

I still have the BC Picture Cookbook that I got in high school 60 years ago. The one you found is the same.

If I would to have to keep only one cookbook in my house and had no internet to check recipes, it would be the Betty Crocker cookbook! That is how I learned to cook! It has everything a new cook needs to know if you read it! Very simple to follow instructions. I have an old one from 1980 and a newer one. I cannot fathom throwing one away! Isn't that some sort of a sin?

A bunch of them are also listed on eBay. As with Amazon, there are several editions with the same cover, published in different years. The contents may or may not have been changed with newer editions.

My Mom always substituted real butter for shortening or margarine in any cookie recipe.For Christmas cookie baking, she tried to get Danish butter, which has more fat. (Not low calorie cooking) I have most of her cookie recipes. Don't have this one, though.

Cookies are yummy..had some leftover chocolate frosting so turned some into whoopie pies.

Terri, I am pretty sure I have that cookbook. I bought it about a year ago from an old lady's estate sale. I loved it because included with it was a diary dating back to 1940 where she wrote about her dinner parties...what she served, recipes and who she invited. She had many parties, from bridge club to dinner and cocktail parties. I need to find it. I have a 1956 second edition Betty Crocker Picture cookbook, but the recipe isn't in that one. I will also check another, newer (but still old) one that I have and see if it is in that one. I know I put that oldest BC cookbook up because it was falling apart....but, exactly where, I don't know. I am going to look for it.

I have decided to buy the facimile/binder one for everyday use..and I may just be naughty and by an old original too..just to look pretty on the shelf.. Lol

After making the cookies though..I can see why they are written to use shortening..probably would make them a touch softer.

Okay, I found the recipe....in the 1956 version. This cookbook

What they did was slightly alter it and changed the name. Instead of 2 cups of sugar, they changed it to 1 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 cup of regular sugar. . They had other variations of the same recipe too....like chocolate and coconut.

Seems like a lot of the older cookie recipes called for shortening or oleo....which is about the same. I am sort of a purist and I won't usually make a cookie that doesn't call for butter.

I used to bake cookies all the time. After I had Erin and she was in school, I started baking cookies and kept a file of my favorite ones. I used to buy that Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Cookie magazine every year and some of my favorite recipes were in that one. There was a recipe for Black Walnut Drops, which was a meringue. I loved that cookie! It was similar to divinity, which can be nigh impossible to make with our constant high humidity. I used make Christmas cookie plates and it was a perfect addition to them. My file got dropped and the cards all mixed up and when I finally rearranged it, I couldn't find that recipe. I don't know if I took it out to copy it or what. I looked on line forever, trying to find it. I couldn't remember for sure which one of the magazines it came out in. And I couldn't find the oldest ones. I was afraid I was going to have to try and find it on ebay or Amazon. I hated to buy a magazine just for that one recipe and had no idea which issue it was in, but I decided I would start buying them. I did one more search online though, and I found it. I was so happy. It is such a simple cookie, but like I said, if you do a bunch for Christmas, it just goes so nicely with other types.
