Need layout design help with coastal lookout room!
Comments (42)Didn't mean that it was too narrow of course. Beach houses are usually pretty narrow. The thought only is to not make them more narrow then they have to be. The screen makes sense now. But then what is on the middle of the second floor? I thought the screen was the 1st floor garage space or something. But what the plan does is make the 3rd floor really narrow - which I see often. Looks good as an elevation. I have to admit that I am more practical and our house is boxy as a result - and we weren't allowed to have a 3rd floor. But that being said, can the roof structure be tweaked a bit to allow bigger windows on the side? I feel that 2 feet windows will not match your inspiration. Not asking for 6 ft windows, maybe 4 ft. It would still be a cool room but 4 ft windows would be better. CPartist's floor plan is what I was thinking too - bathroom in the non water side. Don't forget sunsets of course. In our area, the newer houses tower over the old ranches - mostly 40 years old on our beach. So they can enjoy the sunsets on the sound side from higher floors. This of course assuming you are east facing for your water view but not sure if you have said that....See MoreLiving/Dining: Help making it more bright, coastal, and modern
Comments (19)aktillery9 Thanks for the color inspiration! I love the idea of adding in a fresh color (after all, my entire house can't be white, cream, and blue!), and green is an unexpected yet beautiful choice. (And thanks for including a picture-- it's such a great example of how dark, traditional furniture can be paired with the right items/colors to produce a fresh look! I'd definitely like to do something similar in my space!) suzyq53 Thanks for the feedback. Your comment made me realize that my plea for help might not have been clear-- I definitely don't want a casual beach bungalow look. Ultimately the rooms will be formal spaces, and I'm happy with a more formal, traditional-leaning look... but I do want it to have subtle coastal references, through texture, color, etc. I continue to hope that there's a way to bring "coastal" and "traditional" together in a unique, beautiful way. ARBA Studios I'm mulling over the idea of adding shiplap or something similar to the wall around the fireplace. You're right-- it's not a huge area, so I don't think that it would be a costly change, and it might be a nice way to pull the room from traditional to coastal. Thanks for the inspiration pic! ingrid_vc so. CA zone 9 I agree! BIG rugs are definitely the way to go. I think that once rugs are added, the room will feel much more inviting. And I agree, everything that's currently on/above the mantle needs to be changed, and the dining table is screaming for something beautiful in the center. celerygirl I'm on the hunt for a wicker tray similar to the one in your picture. I think that the texture will be a nice touch, and with the right decor pieces placed on top, I think that it will go a long way to pulling the room together. Please keep the feedback coming, everyone! And if you have specific ideas for items that would look great in my space, that would be much appreciated!...See MoreLiving room help! What kind of rug to use in my living room?
Comments (3)What are the big red scratch-outs? Furniture you aren't keeping? First step is the couch, second is the rug and third is the paint. Paint color should be based on fabrics and textiles (seating and rug) in the room. It can be custom blended, but the furniture is set in stone. When you shop for the rug, it should be 2-4 feet wider than the sofa. Slip it under the front 1/3 of the sofa and have it extend past the ends by 1-2 feet. You can use painter's tape on the floor to figure out the best size for your sofa and room. I'd replace the dining rug too, so the two are coordinated. In addition, push your TV credenza against the wall and put the TV on a swivel base to adjust for viewing....See MoreTaupe sofa in coastal living room?
Comments (3)It really depends on the other elements in the room, but if you're wondering if that color says "coastal", then yes, it does. Think of the shades in aged driftwood....See MoreRelated Professionals
