End of one season, start of another: decor edition
Comments (35)Like nhb, my mom liked to get the holiday decorations put away before the New Year. Since I set our tree up on Thanksgiving weekend and decorate pretty soon after that around the house, I've pretty much followed that schedule since by the end of December it's been a month+. This year for some reason although I got the tree down and collected all my holiday decor to store for another year, I have procrastinated in packing and putting all the various decorations away. I have a system in place, with all my holiday storage bins colored red or green, or with those color lids so they are easily visible in our loft. I number each bin and have a corresponding master list of box contents by number. So when it's time to decorate and I want the boxes of ornaments, I just go to my list and pull out boxes 1, 2 and 3 for example. Anyway, I do rearrange and shift each year which means having to edit my master list....and I've just not felt in the mood to do that. So I have lots of boxes and stuff to be put away that are just sitting in our florida room (AKA home of random objects). Maybe I'll make myself work tonight, unless I laze out and resolve to do it tomorrow :)....See More2016 Tree Seedling Report
Comments (237)bet you didn't think I'd be jumping in on this thread. I admit sometimes - a lot of the time - I'm a lazy gardener. For various reasons this year I placed the most mail order purchases ever, and at the same time saying "never again". A perfect storm converged of a lot of things being available I wanted to try either for the first time, or the last time LOL. It was over 100 plants if you count the orders I got in late fall. I had ordered just a few seeds last fall but as the spring progressed, with a lot else on my mind like the trip to Cali. I just kept putting it off. And off. And off. Keeping the incoming plants alive was the focus. Finally I sowed some - gasp - in the last week of May! Germination rate wasn't great, but if these survive it will work out ok, because I only really want one Abies georgei and Dalbergia hupehana. Neat trees though they may be, I don't have room for a grove of them. BTW the rosewood is just sleeping for the night. It's actually growing really fast. Some old seeds of a Callistemon 'Woodlanders Hardy' that died in the first cold winter didn't germinate, I guess they had gotten too old....See More2016 Tree Seedling Report, PART 2 CONTINUATION THREAD
Comments (92)General updates: Oaks: Most of my oaks are finally done growing. I have one michauxii still hardening off some growth, one bicolor, and my x schuettei (which is 2 yrs old). Thankfully our hard freezes don't usually kick in until mid-Nov at least, so they should be just fine. Maples: All still have some soft new growth except the triflorum, which set a terminal bud in August. The buergerianums appear to be slowing/terminating growth as does the nigrum (which is now 25" tall!). I have a palmatum still growing actively, and a japonicum still chugging along. Magnolia grandiflora: Two specimens, seem to have stopped growing. One has a leaf still expanding, but doesn't have another unfolding in the terminal bud. Taxodium: all three seem to be setting buds now. Metasequoia: single second-year specimen, seems to have reached that stage where growth is still soft, but is now setting up to stop growing for the season (from past experience, they take on a slightly different appearance at this point). Cercis: Done growing for the season. Nyssa: Finally set terminal buds, still hardening the growth. Odd since more mature specimens are actually starting to show hints of color - these seedlings are still green. About 30" tall. Cornus kousa: Done. Some hints of red in the foliage the last few days, but mostly green....See MoreGTKY - Summer Edition
Comments (92)1. What are you wearing from top to bottom right now? Please include color. Blue head to toe: - navy Polo shirt, LL Bean jeans, blue slippers. 2. What was the last thing you ate? Nabisco Honey graham crackers. 3. What do you want your epitaph to be? I'll be cremated so no headstone however I'd love an Irish wake complete with fiddles, pipes and bodhran. And of course I have my playlist ready - I just want to be here when it happens so that I can join in the fun. 4. In what situation or place would you feel the most out of place in? Speaking in front of an auditorium full of people. 5. What is something you will NEVER do again? Ride a roller coaster - I think I've finally aged out of them. 6. As you get older, what are you becoming more and more afraid of? Losing the physical ability to travel. 7. What can you not get right, no matter how many times you try? The list is endless: polishing my nails, heck I have trouble even growing them, public speaking, improving my penmanship, speaking a foreign language well....... 8. What small gesture from a stranger made a big impact on you? 35 years ago DH and I moved into our home and our next door neighbor came over with an entire meal for the 4 of us. We were exhausted. I was 8 months pregnant with my third and had spent the day trying to keep my 2 boys (ages 3 and 5) from occupied so that they didn't get in the way of the movers. I hadn't even met my neighbor but she said she remembered what it was like when she and her DH and 6 kids moved into their house. She was a lovely older woman and her thoughtfulness really touched me. It reminded me that I need to be aware of others who might need a helping hand. 9. Have you ever saved someone’s life? In a way - I insisted on taking someone to the hospital and they ended up having heart surgery. 10. What are you really good at, but kind of embarrassed that you are good at it? I'm organized - and I'm often teased about it....See Moredavidrt28 (zone 7)
