Help for kitchen cabinet choice - country feel
Comments (22)Well, thank so to everyone for their continuing advice and help! After the first series of guiding posts, we decided to go with a stone-look tile in grey with warm undertones; shaker style cabinetry in cherry wood with a mid-tone stain for both the cabinets and the island; and white quartz counters (the counters have very small specks in them that pick up both the reddish brown of the cabinets and the grey of the floors). The handles are very simple knobs with a darkened finish. It will actually look very similar to Feeny's photo. Following Carolyn's advice, we minimized the glazing. Everything has been ordered and will be installed in November - I will post an after photo once the kitchen is finalized!...See MoreFloor partially installed but mixed feelings about layout -rip it out?
Comments (48)I haven't read this whole thread but I get the idea. I would say it depends on what the over all look is you are going for. Tile aligned evenly has a more sophisticated look. I think I agree with your husband. And wow, they really cut your casings short! That is unexeptable. Not sure what I would recommend about that. Who cut them. If it was the tile setters, they goofed big time and i would have them make a blade and run new lumber. Maybe you could give them a break by having the new casing installed your self for the enjoyment of new casing. Looks a little worn. I would get 3 bids on demo. 5k seems VERY high to me. And the sooner the better. Not sure how many days its been down but it takes a while for the thinset to set fully. Thats my 2 cents. I have 22 years experience with design and construction. Oh, and yes III was right, you needed a desinger to help. Sounds like the one you hired was not construction savvy. If you are not looking for a specific sophisticated "our floor makes the design" type look, grouting it with the same color grout and throwing the furniture and rugs back on it, the floor will become a background color/texture and not the main focal point. The other thing you could do is cut area rug shapes around the bulk of the installed waterfall lay and install straight lay for the rest, ie. a border and finish in under your cabinets straight lay. in other words, cut "rugs" out of the bulk of waterfall that is in so far to make sense of being able to go back to straight lay. Your demo bill wont be so high. Note: verify the extra tile you will have to order gets mixed in properly if there is a color variation....See MoreHow do you feel about Ikea kitchen?
Comments (11)IKEA is not cheap! Consider where the saving come from. The consumer saves big on shipping cost! If you consider the fact that IKEA can fit hundreds of kitchens in one tractor trailer load while other manufactures can fit, say only 20 kitchens, you can see how IKEA passes on the savings to their customers. Other companies with pre assembled cabinets factor this expense into the cost of the cabinets. The consumer pays no distributor, dealer and salesman markup. If the consumer does the assembly, then that is yet another cost saved. IKEA cabinets are NOT cheaply built and yes they have a fantastic 25 year warranty. Personally, I would never keep a kitchen or a car or any furniture for 25 years that's a long time and trends change. Consumers can use the free IKEA program to design their own kitchens. IKEA also offers in-store help. I install IKEA and other manufacturers' cabinets. In fact, I sell other cabinets and can mark them up. IKEA sells direct and I do not mark them up. I like IKEA, the quality and enjoy the custom "hacks" which are custom and unique modifications that can be done with IKEA cabinets and prove to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, with other cabinets because IKEA's are unassembled making it feasible. Ask an installer or someone who has IKEA cabinets installed correctly their opinion. IKEA may not be for everyone but neither is a Mercedes....See MoreConcrete Bathrooms - How do you feel about the minimal look?
Comments (14)Gerety Building- LOL. I showed this pic to my husband and his only comment was "If you're going to go there, then go there: Where's the urinal?" No kidding- I was an inch away from actually putting one in- an upstairs bathroom that only he, really, ever uses. The man has earned his right, and it would have tickled him to no end but...I saw the costs to remove/change, within resale, and a better head prevailed on stupid things for the "head"....See MoreRelated Professionals
