Getting to evaporator coils in my central Ac

I have a central AC that I think may have clogged/frozen evaporator coils based on the symptoms. But as best I can tell from where the refrigerant lines are, they are located in an area that looks like just meta ductwork without an obvious access panel . Photos below. Is there a trick of how to get at the coils in an installation like this?

No easy tricks for getting to the coil. Doesn't appear to be any weight from above so you could cut a window then screw a patch over it when finished. What are the symptoms that make you say " I think may have clogged/frozen evaporator coils based on the symptoms."? And have you eliminated other possible causes?

Well, if your coil is frozen, opening it up may not be the solution. Let it melt and then first make sure you have a full charge of refrigerant and that the filter is clean (remove it for a couple of days to test the system). If it still freezes or doesn't cool/blow, only then would I consider breaking it apart.

Replacement units ran anywhere from mid $3k to $10k for approximately the same level systems (Ranging from 3-3.5ton, 13-15seer, and 45-70k btuh on heating input). The Home Warranty can sometimes screw over the homeowner, other times not as bad. Sometimes the contractors are held (read: encouraged) to keep costs very low to keep business coming their way. So they are paid pennies for the covered part of the installation and they must recoup the cost somewhere. So it comes out in higher non-covered charges for installation.

Hi, guys. I just want to give you an update on my central AC project. I finally went with the contractor that gave the most detailed estimation and also did the heat load calculation to figure out that I needed a 4T AC. I decided to go with the Carrier 24ACA3-48-A003 and CNPVP4821 for a good compromise between price and efficiency. I would not be able to recoup the extra few hundred dollars that I paid up front for the higher SEER units. The final price that I paid is $4885 (I got 5% off for paying with check instead of credit card). This also includes a nice TP-PAC18 Edge programmable thermostat. The contractor did the installation today. He put in new lines (3/8 for liquid and 7/8 for vapor) on the outside of the house going from ground up to the attic. He also had to install a couple of extra things due to the vertical seperation is more than 20'. The job is pretty nice and clean. This installation also includes Carrier extended warranty for 10yrs, part and labor, on everything. Pretty nice. I guess now I have to wait till the first hot day to see how well this work. Twee I would get a second opinion. Leaks at a valve are usually easy and relatively inexpensive to repair. Evap coil leaks In an air handler can be another matter entirely. Standard procedure when adding refrigerant is to include dye especially when tech did not attempt to find the leak. Let the system then run for several days and return to check coil to locate leak with proper tools. Was dye inserted? Do you even know? Yes, evap coils can be replaced in an air handler. However, usually this s not cost effective due to the expense. I assume air handler is out of warranty. IMO

For lazy technicians maybe, but to say replace the coil, when the leak is on a fitting, is sloppy work. Most coils can be repaired. If multiple leaks or advisories to replace are known, the reasons may offer a solution to replace the coil. If under warrantee, then replace. If replacing the coil, try to match the coil to get the best SEER available. Most technicians will not want to do this, because they dont know how to do the SEER comparison.

save maybe $50 to $80 in a service call and create hundreds or more in possibly unnecessary repairs to duct work.

Sounds like the road to disappointment, if you ask me.

I would shut down the furnace for a few hours and see if water is draining to the floor drain and also check the drain line, it may be clogged. The other item without cutting up your ductwork, restart your furnace at a set temperature of 76 deg F or 24 deg C. People think that all units must operate at 72 deg or 22 deg. C, which is wrong, when I do the load calculation the design temp is 76 deg. F. I use to live in a 2 story house and to push the cooling to the second floor I closed my vents on the main floor, bathrooms and cooking area except for the living room and dining room and have the furnace run continuously. Placed a fan over the bedroom vents and had a fan operate in the kitchen on the main floor. Cool air is heavy and will drop to the main and have fans running on the second and main level. You want to operate a dehumidifier in the basement to remove access humidity. Humidity is always an issue in the summer as well as the cost of energy for operating the cooling cycle compared to heating.
