I don't think the Small Sugar will be contained on a 3x5 trellis, but I guess you could always let it trail over the other side. Experimentation is always fun. You could trail one plant and prune another - see which works best. I am planting New England Pie (which, I believe is basically the same as the Small Sugar) because it is supposed to be the best for pies. I will be trellising it up, but I have some old wood pallets (that I deconstructed) that are 8 feet long. I am hoping to sink the verticals 2-2.5 feet into the ground for stability, and then add some extra height to make a trellis that is 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide. That would be tall enough to let it roam free, and I figure I could prune the ends when they reach the top, so that the plant can put more energy into the fruit. By that time I figure each plant will have 3 or 4 fruit. Most pumpkin growers recommend pruning the vines once the fruit is set anyway. Personnally, I wouldn't try to vine something that may be a "bush"-type variety. It probably wouldn't work that well.

I really love Olly but the only thing I would change is to make it taller. It's not short but certainly with such big blooms it could use more height in my opinion. It didn't help that I planted it in front of my skyscraper 'Happy is the Heart' which is 5 feet tall!

Julia: I move my pots up against the house over winter for radiant heat. The best location is on the west side, but I've run out of the "best" of anything with regards to space, so some are stored on the east side, and the small pots (6 inches or so) are over wintered in my attached unheated garage. My potting mix is a personal blend of sandy compost, bark fines (which I sift myself from pine bark mulch), aquarium gravel, "coarse and chunky" perlite I buy off of Amazon and Osmocote Plus..........Kay: No Way Jose is a beauty alright. I've never had it be anything but double. It is not the most vigorous or tallest daylily I have, but for a smaller container it's been fine. I'm so happy to hear you are trying it again Sherry. I do so like mine. I didn't get many pictures of it this year what with one thing and the other, but it was its usual cheery self and bloomed well. Plus it survived the February Arctic front that killed so many of my other potted daylilies. What's not to like?.................Maryl
