Home office, need help!

I thought I had a plan, but I feel like I'm messing up. lol I don't know where to go from here. Should I go with a black desk? Brass desk? Put it in front or to the side? The pictures can be returned, they are from Homegoods. Which would you choose or neither?

Should I have a secondary accent color? I feel like too much white, black and gold would be too boring. Have any ideas for curtains, what I should do with the blank wall also? Ideas for filling in the shelves?

Any ideas will help, thank you!!

I actually like the big artwork a lot based upon your inspiration but I think the rug will be problematic. It's a great rug but not for that room. If this is an office you need something that you can move a desk chair on easily. Maybe you need a couple small rugs for color but that will not impede using the desk.

Tall bookcases on either side of console. If desk is facing widow then option for your large reading chair to be in front of bookcase angled toward desk (view out window if you glance left). If there is space, low file cabinet could be on other side of window in entry corner. I have BM Abington Putty on 3 walls with BM Providence Olive on accent bookcase wall. I lightened the room by painting bookcases BM Shaker Beige - a color I pulled from my rug. I share colors only to inspire possibility of not painting all 4 walls yet if you are done with Abington Putty you are done with it. Space for large art over console. Lots of fun and inspiring ideas posted by others!

- I would empty it out, donating or throwing away what you don't need - Keep the curtains bc you will need relief from the glare - Set up a work station with a desk/table - Get a desk lamp and floor lamp - In the short term, run an extension cord/surge protector into the room for your computer set-up, you can also add a fan or 2 for relief from the heat (there are portable AC units that would be a good investment at some point)

We had a similar office in a prior home and we outfitted it with a large credenza/hutch on the top wall, a lateral file cabinet in the bottom right corner, and the desk perpendicular to the left wall. My husband preferred to sit on the bottom side of the desk facing the credenza, but facing the window is also an option…would just need to move the desk further down the wall to have more space between the desk/credenza. The second option gives easier access to credenza, if that’s a priority. Bottom line is…there is plenty of room to set up a generous office with lots of storage.

I like what you've done so far. As for a desk, will you put an area rug under it? If so, start with the area rug and get one with a tad of color to give the room life. I would add a desk with metal legs and a wood top to add some warmth and then incorporate some wood items to the shelf. What makes the room above so interesting is dipping in to different styles and blending them. Think brass armed desk lamp on a wood desk etc. Many more will chime in soon.

How do you plan to use the room? Do you regularly work at home? Would you have clients in your home office? If you will use it a lot, you need to prioritize function, even if it is a bit at the expense of form.

At work, where I get office visitors fairly often, I prefer to face the door. But I also want to face my monitor (you notice how offices in design magazines never seem to have to deal with normal office hardware?), and don't want it between me and any visitors. My desk is L-shaped, with the monitor in the corner and the keyboard on a keyboard tray. The door is at about a 30 degree angle to my right.

I like the large artwork, but for me the smaller one is kind of meh. Based on the layout in your inspiration pics, the smaller one will be more in your field of view when you are working (on the side or front wall). Definitely get something that you will enjoy, not just something that serves the decor.

The office is right at the entrance of the house so it will be seen by everyone. No clients or anything, this is my office for doing bills and storage of supplies. That's it. So I can make it as pretty/unfunctional as I want honestly. It's more for show.

I love whimsical pictures, like dog art or something funny. But it's not something I have to have. I just want it to look good when you walk in the door.

Good rug or not? I thought about painting a desk like an emerald green or something. Or I can look for one with more colors. Any suggestions?

My initial thought were the large painting is too bold and the rug is very thick to be on top of carpet. Then I seen your inspiration photo and could see where you are going with the bold art. My question is how is the rest of your home decorated? The one inspiration photo is very beautiful but it has to fit in with the rest of your home. I think too that what you see when you first walk in a home "sets the stage" for the rest of the home. Just something to think about.

I am doing traditional glam if that is even a thing. So, yes the paintings are a little out of place for me, so I will return them. And the more I think about it, I think the rug needs more color.

The current furnishings are a little Asian in their style/inspiration, so I would go with something like Chinese red lacquer for the desk in a very simple Parsons style. Would look great with that area rug as well! But then I am a fan of hits of intense color in an otherwise monochromatic color scheme :-)

I definitely like the larger art piece and would keep both it and the rug (even tho I am not a huge fan of modern/abstract art personally). And check out GrandinRoad online (similar to Wayfair) for some wonderful dog art!!

Here is some inspiration of a more traditional room. And there isn't a rug, just carpet similar to yours but yet room has colour. I think you could have a layout like this in your room. Move the credenza and etarges to the wall facing window. A mirror above the credenza would reflect light. You could then do a feature wall behind desk so a large colourful art piece would really pop. Two chairs angled in front of window woukd make a great sitting area.

Do you know, I had planned on doing the top 2 pictures?? I had bought the paint and had my husband on board to do the molding. Maybe I should go back to plan A.
