Home Repair Design Dilemma home office

I need help turning this porch into a small home office.

I start a new job on 6/6 and i need an office help!!! there is no air conditioning and it has a semi broken sliding glass door on one long side and a old broken back door and windows from floor to ceiling on the other long side. There also is no outlet on the porch.

We need much more information! What will you need to plug in (ex: printer? desktop computer? fan?) And, what type of furniture do you need to use? Also - please post a diagram with the room dimensions, including windows, doors, etc.

If you need to plug in any equipment, call an electrician asap so that you can get outlets installed! It won't be safe to run an extension cord...

I would put the desk in the top right corner and the sofa along the wall to your right when you walk into the room. The chair could go in the top left corner by the window as long as you still have access to the closet (sliding doors?). You could wait until you have those pieces in the room before you decide on the small table. You could strategically place a mirror or two to help reflect light and the outdoors into the corner where you'll be working.

What about a pergola extending from the left side of the house to the second floor bump out on the right? The section above the door could have a solid roof for weather protection, while the rest is open to allow light into the window. Or you could make a gable portico over the door and extend the pergola to the left off of that. You could do one over the garage as well but that might be too much, and to me adding dimension on the left is important. Properly sized shutters would actually work quite nicely here Someday :) With the style of the new garage door that would push your house a bit toward farmhouse.

@Jess. You're Welcome! It's difficult to get a perfect room and your needs in a small space. For me, placing the desk there, would be fine for these reasons.... This is a Dual-Purpose Room 1. Your desk has a light weight feeling to it, it's not bulky, although one with more storage might be better functionally. (which is still ok) Not a lot of choices for you 2. Because you enter the room moving to the left, that pathway is all clear. 3. You won't run into a desk at current space, when entering the room 4. Better use of the space between the closet and doorway, given it's construction 5. Visually, a better, more inviting floor plan overall 6. Furniture placements are more aesthetically pleasing (better balance) 7. Better use of space you have 8. Sofa & coffee table area are inviting and functional. It won't feel like there is nowhere else to place the sofa in your home 9. You will 'feel' good about the room and like going in there 10. The room might even feel larger

I like the idea of a window wall because otherwise you'll be in a cave. This may sound strange at first, but if you have curtains on the inside of your window wall you could draw them when you need more peace and quiet. They would also absorb noise to help keep your conversations from being heard all over the house. Is that alcove going to be enough space for everything you need when you're working?

- I would empty it out, donating or throwing away what you don't need

- Keep the curtains bc you will need relief from the glare

- Set up a work station with a desk/table

- Get a desk lamp and floor lamp

- In the short term, run an extension cord/surge protector into the room for your computer set-up, you can also add a fan or 2 for relief from the heat (there are portable AC units that would be a good investment at some point)

Make sure i f you use an extension cord, it is heavy duty, and yes, have a surge protector
