Need Help For Douglas Fir Pine Trees
Comments (4)contact your county Ag office or Extension office.. and ask which of the current pine/spruce/fir plagues are in your area ... and ask for them to stop by and help you ... and how did your doug fir.. lose PINE needs?? .. its either a pine.. or a fir.. but it can not be both .. which make me wonder about the ID's here ... any chance at some pix ... and how bad was last years heat and drought???? usually.. interior browning or yellowing is normal.. but we start to get concerned when its at the tips ... but w/o a pic.. we cant get too far with helping ... i am surprised you still have ash ... EAB hasnt hit???? ken...See MoreHelp Choosing Pine Trees
Comments (29)on the left.. the blue tree is abies concolor candicans.. behind it is an apple ... EVERYTHING PAST THE APPLE.. but for the giant cherries way in back.. and the oak on the right top ... WAS ADDED SINCE I MOVED HERE IN 1/2000 ... it was previously a meadow horse pasture .... all were one gal plants averaging about $20 ... i realize you are moving from the house building to the landscaping .... but you can do so much better than what you are thinking right now .... and i addressed where you should visit for inspiration .... your next best planting time is ground thaw next april ... spend the whole winter thinking up a plan.. and do better than some GG's and some pines ... its akin to saying i will paint the living room white ... and buy some lawn chairs for the space ... i presumes you plan on living in the house you just built for decades.. well .. then plan out an outdoor living space with as much care as you did the house and the interior... and these gg's were 6 inches tall in 4/2001 ... 2 inch peat pot and 4 inch rooting ... $2 a piece ... and the pix were last year .... if you want to drive up to adrian MI ... i can give you a tour ... the beauty of conifers.. except for the ones that have seasonal color change.. is that you can look at them all year round .... ken...See MoreSilver blue Douglas Fir - named varieties?
Comments (7)Thanks Ken....'Brooks' is a similar colour. On reading the rest of the thread, I can only assume you're growing the wrong P. menziesii. You need to get your hands on var. glauca. It's easily zone 3 (from the right seed source) with old trees in both Edmonton and Banff, Alberta. In Ontario, it is fairly widely planted and grows at a rate just a little slower than Picea abies (but faster than P. glauca). Oldest specimen I know of is a ~120 year old at the Dominion arboretum in Ottawa (zone 5a)....See MoreHoopsii and Douglas Fir pine cones
Comments (2)Here these wouldn't be cones but instead deformed shoots produced by infestation with gall aphids. That would be why they'd have needles sticking out of them. The insects settle in and suck on the new shoots, which then grow around them to form protective chambers (galls). If you open one of these up it is a sort of little bug condo or apartment building. You will want to look this condition up and consider a control program as otherwise your trees will be marred by this condition for as long as re-infestation continues to occur. It sounds like they are having other problems as well that need to be identified and corrected before you will be getting good results from your planting. I suppose another possibility may be bagworms. Likelihood of one or the other will vary regionally....See MoreHeruga (7a Northern NJ)
