Vent hood over island - How complicated?
Comments (7)I think I have a similar set up so I'm including a picture. I would note that island hoods generally cost significantly more than wall ones (the difference would probably pay for moving your plumbing), but I went ahead anyways because I like my layout. It's generally recommended your hood be about 26 - 30 " above the range. I went with 31" to make sure I would not bump my head, but I had some extra cfms and an extra wide hood. I also got one that does not have sharp corners. I would recommend doing a mock-up to see what height is comfortable. I can't advise you about the venting; there isn't a room above my kitchen so we just vented through the attic. Remember that if you go above 600 CFM you'll want to look into "make-up air". I feel "self conscious" about my non-matching fridge, but after splurging on granite counters a new SS one just wasn't in the budget. Best wishes....See Moremustbnuts & Others-HELP! Comments (13)That looks great!! Well, maybe not LOOKS great, but will certainly function great and once your BS is done, you'll never see the patch job. I don't know what the bathroom granite is called. It was exotic and cheap and the colors were perfect so I got it. I'll post a picture once it's installed and maybe someone will know what it is. Believe me....I am the queen of budget!!lol!! I have exotic granite taste but tier one granite budget. I actually ended up with an exotic called Delicatus though, for much less than even the most common granite would have cost (about 1/3 of the regular price). They had two slabs on the yard that had been outside in the sun for several years which caused some of the resin to get yellow and brittle. They wanted to move it out so they gave it to me at a HUGE discount. They worked around all the bad resin and the few bad spots that remain can be polished out. Here's a couple pics of it. It has the most beautiful chunks of smokey quartz all through it along with glittery spots of mica and lots of veining. I am thrilled with it!...See More27' vent a hood over 24' stove
Comments (3)Since no one has answered this, I'll take a stab at it... We have a 24" deep hood over a standard cooktop. It's 30" off the cooking surface. Our counters are the standard 25-1/2" deep (24" cabinet + 1-1/2" counter overhang). We are a tall family (ranging from 5'10" to 6'5" and still growing) and we do not bump our heads on the hood (well, my DH did once when he was peering up into it and didn't lower his head enough to get it out!). If your range is 30" deep, that's 4-1/2" deeper than our counter so I think 27" deep will be fine (that's only 3" deeper than ours). If you grill or do high-heat cooking, a deeper hood is often recommended anyway! This is what a 24" deep hood looks like over a standard 25-1/2" counter (36" wide cooktop). Vent-A-Hood: SEPH18-242 You might consider pulling the range out...do you have room to make all your counters 3" or so deeper? Those extra 3" make a huge difference in work space...so if you could pull the counters out, pulling the range out would be natural and look "planned"....See MoreIn the weeds: Vent hood, make-up air, and venting outside - help!

These are like giant truck mufflers, except designed for various diameter ducts. They have low pressure loss (forget the value but it is a lot less than baffles). Fantech is the source. - Any benefit re:sound to using two smaller liners instead of one big one and only using one at a time when using only one side of stove? Or is this magnifying the cost for no good reason other than sound? (Because I'm assuming I'd then have two runs up and out and two things on the roof because they wouldn't combine to avoid a turn and to ensure proper function? If only one side were run at a time, then MUA costs could be lower, but where code requires MUA, I am willing to bet a donut that the AHJ will demand an MUA system that can handle both at once. In theory, the sound reduction will be only 3 dB less. Also, when using the central burners, you will still need both systems for capture and containment. Well, I guess three things on the roof then with the MUA. While commercial systems mostly use roof MUA entry, and I use roof MUA entry, the options for residences are wide open and may include side of house entry, or entry into a basement that has an air path access to the kitchen....See Morerosiearias03
