27' vent a hood over 24' stove

Hello,

I know there have been several post similar to this but I'm hoping to get some first hand feedback. I recently purchased a vent a hood PRH18-236 on ebay.

I mistakenly purchased the 27" deep model instead of the 24" deep model.

The range I'm using is the 36" American range

The recommended hood depth for the range is 24".

I'm trying to determine if it's possible to use the hood I purchased over this range (or any 24" range). The total depth of the range is 30" from back to front. The cooking surface is 24" deep. If I use it will I be constantly hitting my head on it? Could I pull the range further out from the wall to compensate? Does anybody have any real world experience with this?

Since no one has answered this, I'll take a stab at it...

We have a 24" deep hood over a standard cooktop. It's 30" off the cooking surface. Our counters are the standard 25-1/2" deep (24" cabinet + 1-1/2" counter overhang). We are a tall family (ranging from 5'10" to 6'5" and still growing) and we do not bump our heads on the hood (well, my DH did once when he was peering up into it and didn't lower his head enough to get it out!).

If your range is 30" deep, that's 4-1/2" deeper than our counter so I think 27" deep will be fine (that's only 3" deeper than ours). If you grill or do high-heat cooking, a deeper hood is often recommended anyway!

This is what a 24" deep hood looks like over a standard 25-1/2" counter (36" wide cooktop).

You might consider pulling the range out...do you have room to make all your counters 3" or so deeper? Those extra 3" make a huge difference in work space...so if you could pull the counters out, pulling the range out would be natural and look "planned".

Hi Mattt19,

You can definitely pull the range from the wall to
equal the hood distance. Even further but not too far
as the hood would not help to take the grease away.

here are some pictures...

This one is pulled forward too but just a few inches.
Similar to what I believe you meant when you said pulling
your range away from the wall.

Okay this photo is not the same kind of hood. But notice
the moulding around the range. The range is pulled out
and has beautiful wood carved columns to blend into the
cabinetry.

The range is pulled out here and a cabinet built around
the range, making a special area to cook. Of course
yours would have a different kind of hood above but you
get the idea that this range is pulled forward.

Check this image out. All the cabinets are pulled foward
leaveing space for the backsplash and hood. Interesting option.

To install a new more powerful gas range I am in the process of upgrading the stove area which includes the vent, wall covering, new gas connection and even the floor covering. I spent a lot of time looking at the hoods one manufacture at a time all online. Most of them hood manufactures recommend height above the range to be around 27ish to 30ish inches (my install will be under cabinet or wall 24 inch deep hood minimum). So this throws the hoodÂs bottom edge height to 63 to 66 inch which hit me chin to nose high. With a deeper hood extending past the stove top would be a problem for me. Then again a higher one would be loosing venting efficiency. I did not expect to pay so much for a hood. The extras to install these more powerful stoves start adding up. Reminds me of the old story I once heard as a child of Stone Soup that Captain Kangaroo told on TV. Paraphrased the story goes a hobo asks a woman to borrow a pot and water so he could make stone soup using the small stone in his pocket. The lady falls for it. Then he asks to use the range to boil it then one item at a time salt, pepper, and pretty soon he coned the woman out of ever item needed to make beef stew. That how this stove install going. I have not even selected a hood yet. I really trying to do it correct the first time I dont think I have a prayer of doing it .

"From the Floor to the top of the cabinet I have 66 inches." "both my wife and I are 5'10"..." If you're 5'10", you're 70" tall. Why are the top of your cabinets below your head? The top of my cabinets is at 84". Did you mean the bottom of the cabinet? If so, and it sounds much more reasonable, then my thought would be to either remove the cabinet and replace with a chimney hood or replace the cabinet with a smaller (ie shorter) cabinet. For example, the cabinet over my range is 16" tall, but the one over the fridge is 12". I'd replace the 16" cabinet with a new 12" cabinet.

You might check with your local planning department to see if there is some rule about distance between roof vents, although I'm going to guess that there probably isn't. Most furnace vents are taller chimney-style vents that vent combustion fumes upward. A proper roof jack for a Vent-A-Hood exhaust hood has a lower profile and will vent horizontally and slightly downward at the roof line, so there probably isn't any conflict. You can see the type of roof jack recommended by Vent-A-Hood at the link below. The roof jacks are in the second row. Be sure that you get one sized to match the size of your ductwork. Ideally, for several reasons, the house interior should be kept at the same pressure as the house exterior. However, it is usually sufficient for the house interior to operate a bit lower in pressure than the exterior, depending on the state of combustion appliances in the house. Combustion appliances taking in household air can be back-drafted with lowered house pressure -- sometimes as small as a fraction of an inch of water column -- thereby introducing carbon monoxide into the house. This is bad. Without such appliances, or with them having their own MUA, or being in a room sealed from the kitchen, replacement air wise, lower household pressures can be safe. But this is still a slight drop in pressure, because hood blowers typically gag when the pressure loss is higher than 2 inches of water column pressure, sometimes even less. (Sea level is about 407 inches of w.c.) And one doesn't want to depend on wall infiltration for MUA. It is insufficient and dusty. So, no combustion appliance risk, use a duct, filter, and heater if necessary (and damper). Pressure loss vs. design needs to be compared to the hood blower fan curve to see what penalty is being created in available full power air flow rate (CFM). If there is combustion appliance risk, then use a power-controlled blower in the path along with the other listed items. See Fantech, or Accurex, or maybe even Broan for an MUA package example. MUA should get into the kitchen via a diffuser that directs the MUA such that turbulence is not created at the cooking zone because turbulence will interfere with plume capture and containment. The reference to hot air is not clear; are you in the tropics? A review of MUA related threads in this forum may add insight.

There is no reason you can't just use the 27" with a "normal" install -- it will capture better from the front burners.

You won't be hitting your head on it if either it is below your eye level, or above the top of your head. Try a cardboard or 1x4 mockup and see what works for you.
