Help with Venting over a Wolf DF 30'& Kobe vent and limited space

Here's my problem, I really don't want to screw up here or regret anything.

Decided on a Wolf DF 30". Would also love to go with a Kobe under cabinet hood.

These are the measurements I have to work with.

From the Floor to the top of the cabinet I have 66 inches.

The oven is aprox 36" in Height, leaving me just 30" for a hood.

Above where the vent should be, I have a cabinet which measures 18" in height.

The smallest Kobe hood is aprox 5 1/2", which would leave me only 24 1/2" of space betwen the hood and the counter. The vent comes out aprox 22".

I was even hoping to go for a 7" Kobe hood as it has the baffles which I hear work better and quieter vs the non-baffles ones.

So I either have 24 1/2", or 23" between the vent and the Wolf.

First issue, Kobe said that the Warranty will be void on the hood because it has to be a minimum of 27" away from the stove.

Second issue, warranty aside. What is your opinion on having the vent either 24 1/2" or 23" from the stove, will I regret that, is it way too close for an under the cabinet vent.

Please help, it's really one of the last sticking points preventing us from completing.

Are you working with permits? If so, you may have fire code issues to deal with that require 24" to 36" depending on how they are written.

In my opinion, 24" is just way too close. Think about getting a good sized pot off the back burner and over a pot on the front burner...

I'd ditch the over-hood cabinet and do the venting properly.

Have to weigh in here and support sfjeff - PLEASE dont put the hood below 30" from the cooktop - the Wolf is gas i guess - the risks of a fire booting up in your hood from accumulated grease if you slack of cleaning it is high. The other big factor is work out where that hood will be height wise - the underside will be around 60" from the floor - thats 5' - the hood will be below eye level if you are taller than 5' and you will constantly bang your head on it. The code in most states and provinces is 30" minimum for ventilation over gas.

Thank you for your reply, BluCasetta. You're right; there are very few reviews of the Bertazzoni range out there, especially from people that have had them for a while. Your taking the time to come back and share is much appreciated! Part of why I was considering the dual fuel is that I've read that the all gas only goes down to 275 degrees. There a couple of things that I cook that require a lower oven temperature than that. For example, the chocolate-espresso dacquoise from cook's illustrated requires a 250 degree oven. But I may go with the all gas rather than the dual fuel anyway; I'm just gathering information at this point. The reviews for the all gas have generally been positive. I think overall oven steadiness that equates to even cooking trumps any concerns I have about the lower temperature limit. Glad to hear your "Meats come out of the oven succulent, casseroles are evenly cooked, baking has been a pleasureÃ¢ÂÂ¦". ItÃ¢ÂÂs great that the simmer and high burner options and the range of heat in between are fine on your Berta, too. Some have expressed concerns about the fan blowing hot air into the room when the oven is on, but I think I could get over that since my kitchen tends to be a bit cold in winter anyway, and I use the oven much less in summer. Hope you continue to enjoy your cooking in your little 1917 cottage. :~) Whit461, Your kitchen looks nice; you've accomplished a lot so far! Don't take shortcuts and vent according to the recommendations of the range you buy. Electric and gas are not even close to the same thing....More heat, odor, grease, steam, and smoke. "and I've not ever had a problem with my current electric range." "My present range puts out btus from 4k to 12.5 k and we have never had a problem" You don't have a Wolf, or anything close.

If that picture really reflects what you have, then I would be worried too. If the cabs on either side of your hood drop down close to the countertop, as the picture suggests, then you may have under 24'' of clearance from rangetop to bottom of cabinet. With a high output range that would seem to be an invitation to at least scorching of the cabinets, if not an all-out fire hazard. If you've searched for hood vent discussions on this forum you've seen that there is a strong disapproval for hoods that are equal in width to the cooktop, let alone narrower than the cooktop! Even with a high cfm hood (and 680 cfm does not qualify in my mind as high), you may pull some of the hot convection current away from your side cabs, but there is direct radiant heat energy that is not affected at all by airstream which will heat your cabinets. That's independent of the smoke/grease/odor issues that an inadequately sized hood would cause, that you say don't worry you. Why the compulsion to go with a 36'' range in a space designed for a 30''? You lose a couple burners of course but if that's what you have to work with that's a sensible option. Not to mention that a six burner Wolf would really require more than 680 cfm for decent ventilation. Or, can you pull down your two flanking cabinets and replace them with narrower cabs? Or even just delete them altogether and mount a freestanding hood there?

It is difficult for myriad reasons. One is that no one publishes data for pressure loss through their hoods, which is needed for calculation of what cfm one will really get from a given fan. Another is that significant searching is needed to find out the characteristics of the rising effluent so a valid rule of thumb can be established. A third is how high one is willing to raise his debt limit. A fourth is aesthetics versus function. And don't forget make up air. kas

markbr, I just purchased the same range. I have 8 ft. ceilings so I decided to forgo the cabinet above the range since it would have to be short. My design doesn't allow for cabinets to the ceiling due to structural elements that can't be changed w/o big $$. Kobe makes a number of chimney hoods that would work above the range. Is this an option for you? Could this cabinet be used somewhere else in the design? Does that 18" cabinet work with a different hood manufacturer?

open the PDF manuals you can get off manufacturer's web sites and you'll know then what they say about height above cooking surfaces, gas and electric. Call the master distributor too; their name will be found on the manufacturer's web site. There, someone will be an expert --- a real expert, who knows the answer.

This will answer your question for Kobe or for the next manufacturer that you try out.

Are you referring to the hood manufacturer? I actually called Kobe and they said the minimum it should be from the hood is 27" or the warranty is void, but the salesman said that it is up to the distributor and will call them to see.

I did happen to see another hood in the showroom that came down down leaving aprox 24" of space betwen the range and the hood, both my wife and I are 5"10 and suprisingly it didn't bother me at all. It came out aprox 20" from the wall, similiar to what the Kobe would be.

I'll let you guys know how it works out, worse comes to worse I will have to modify the cabinet above.

only 18" above my range. Never bothered me a bit. Didn't even know there was a rule. It looks normal and all. I'm only 5'2" and it's a generic range with the back electronic panel so maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyway I'm weary about getting my new range and hood that it will be soooo high up. LOL.

If you can sacrifice usable cabinet space Kobe has an under cabinet hood with baffle filters that only extends 2" below the cabinet (RA028). The rest of the unit ends up inside the cabinet.

If you're 5'10", you're 70" tall. Why are the top of your cabinets below your head? The top of my cabinets is at 84". Did you mean the bottom of the cabinet? If so, and it sounds much more reasonable, then my thought would be to either remove the cabinet and replace with a chimney hood or replace the cabinet with a smaller (ie shorter) cabinet. For example, the cabinet over my range is 16" tall, but the one over the fridge is 12". I'd replace the 16" cabinet with a new 12" cabinet.
