Collect some photos of brick and siding exteriors whose color schemes you really like to put in your ideabook.

Your house is quite nice already, and Beverly's changes make it even better.

The #1 thing I'd do would be to completely remove the storm door. Its scalloped trim is completely wrong for your house's style, and its central location brings so much attention to it. Either just let your main door stand on its own, or if you feel you must have a storm door, get one that is quite plain in style. Storm doors aren't always necessary, especially if your main door is solid and the weather stripping is well-installed.

You could install a bigger pendant over the entry. Make sure it is in a modern or mid-century modern style......NOT Colonial or cottage.

Beyond that, landscaping changes would add some pizzazz. Right now, you have all green, gray and brown landscaping PLUS an all green, gray and brown house. One of the two needs some color. And not just a couple annuals....I'd recommend enlarging and restyling beds, and adding some large, colorful shrubs. Looks like a colder climate, so I'd consider colorful foliage, like redtwig dogwood, dwarf Japanese maple. @beverly, thank you for the pictures and idea about the brown trim and entry way, but i'd like step away from the brown and bland look of my home.

@qam yes i totally agree that the storm door needs to go, i'm just debating my new storm door should be left white trimmed and repaint all the grey or just paint the storm door's trim to match the grey. My front door is not well insulated or i would live without the storm door.
Yes i need some color to pop and i like the bush idea of adding color.
i actually bought a new light for the front door which has a modern look and a more square look to it. It a little larger but not too much larger than my existing light.


Do all of you think adding white, light blue, or a more brighter color would look good on my house?
Do you think i should put trim around my windows or leave it alone?

No. White will stand out like a sore thumb. So will a light blue.

Right, no need to trim the windows with white. Much preferable to keep them dark and coordinated as they are.

Where is the house located? Depending on the area of the country, painting the brick will add or detract from the perceived value.

Your and my house are about the same era, with dark aluminum windows. I've seen so many in my area that have gone with white replacement windows or trim and it makes me want to cry...SO against the earth-tone aesthetic. Please don't paint the rick either. cpartist's version is gorgeous and would be even better if you decide to take some money and replace the storm door with something more clean-lined and appropriate. The colors you have are beautiful and the correct trim will really frame everything nicely.

@mahatmacat1 thank you for you advice, i plan to replace the storm door soon and will share a picture once i do so. Also the light above the door will be replaced soon too.

Sounds good...and um, I wasn't going to say anthing about the light but I'm glad to hear you're replacing it too :) Actually I can't talk -- the PO of our home took out whatever had been the original, appropriate A-frame foyer light fixture inside the foyer (very central to our facade--big plate glass entry window) and replaced it with a HD white fan...oh the humanity...but I haven't found the right fixture to replace it with despite a few years of searching...I'll have to live vicariously through your new light choice!

I really like what cpatartist has shown,. Getting rid of the gray will be refreshing. How about a dark red for the door/stormdoor?

@mahatmacat1 perfectly okay to fully criticize anything to do with my home, i actually am looking for criticism. Yes the light need replacing, i have one and need to get a stable ladder to install. I hope it will look good, will upload a picture once it's installed (could take weeks though)

@grapefruit1 thanks i like the earthy color, but was searching for something to give my earthy home a little more vibrance. Yes a dark red door would look good, but my door has a mahogany stain applied to it, and i need a storm door since it's not weather proof.

Your home wouldn't work with more vibrance. The more earthy colors help tie it to the land

I agree once again with cpartist :) Our era homes lose their essence when people try to make them into bungalows with a lot of trim or paint them like colonials or whatever else. Your house is by no means a 70s excrescence -- it's beautiful in its own earthy way. Looking forward to seeing the light fixture!

Except for the grey, your color combo is good. I would only change the grey trim to a darker shade of the green or dark brown.

Changing to an all glass storm door will help.
